That is a seriously ugly muzzle device. How well did it work?

The recoil reducer is not a blank firing attachment. This particular muzzle device was made in Lithgow but never saw service in the Australian military. These were specifically made for the Malayan contract rifles.

Quoted from pg 37 of Skennerton's book...

"Most of the Malayan contract rifles were fitted with recoil reducers, favored by troops of smaller stature because of the considerable recoil generated by the 7.62mm NATO round on full auto. Many of these rifles are also recorded as being fitted with short butts, better suited to the smaller Asians."

There were three variations of the device, all made for the Malayan contract rifles. The front plate of each removable by pin spanner and one by hex wrench. The front plate was threaded internally to accept a blank firing attachment.

You could think of it as a huge primitive muzzle brake.

A series to grub screws aroung the perimiter of the device could be removed and replaced in specific arrangements to vent muzzle gas to best suit the individual operator in controlling the weapon during FA fire.

Three variants...
