I have a 1006 I love to hate. It's a beautiful gun. Customized by Mag-Na-Port. It has the jeweled finish on hammer, trigger and a couple other places. Trigger job and I installed Tritium night sights. It is one of my most accurate guns and it never hiccups. I've fed it all sorts of factory and reloads and it just shoots. I keep it by my bed. The reason I hate it is it's so darn heavy and big. Great HD gun, but I don't see how FBI agents ever managed to carry this thing around all day. If any FBI females carried this thing we'd better check for steroids. I can't imagine any but the largest females getting their hands around the grip. I have average hands and it's a challenge. I don't think there is much market for one and for what it does it wouldn't make sense to give it away. Anyone else have this monster?

Love It

I love mine. I'm a big person with big hands. It fits me perfectly. I'm ready to get a couple more 10mms. Maybe a 1066 or 1076. Maybe a Dan Wesson.......

Same thing as with a Delta 1911 style, they are well built guns, very dependable and pack a s***load of punch and are not for everyone thats why God created the Glock 10MM for the smaller guys who like lighter high quality 10's. I carry my 1006 in a Protech Vertical shoulder holster and love it.

10mms

I am an active collector of 10mms. The FBI issue gun was the model 1076 which was a bit smaller than the 1006 and also had a couple of features the 1006 did not have. Great guns and enjoy shooting them. Very accurate caliber as well as great bullet performance. Excellant choice for both hunting and personal protection.

Keep your powder dry!

Had one loved it but it got sold when I consolidated on the 45 ACP as my auto caliber, there's alot to be said for the built like a tank 1006!

The 10xx series is great. They are heavy, but also built like a tank (just in case you miss with all ten rounds and use it as a club). Really they are great guns in a great caliber. I carry a 1066 during the cold months and get used to the weight.

I carried a 10mm for 12 of 30 years of law enforcement. On duty, or off. Undercover, or just roaming around the back country. I have carried 2 Colt Delta Elites, 1 S&W 1006, 1 Glock 20, 1 Glock 29. I am down to only three now. 1 S&W 1026, 1 Colt Delta Elite, and the Glock 29. I may be going into withdrawals. I just might need to find a S&W 1076, to go along with the 1026.
Yeah, I got real nuts about the 10mm when Col. Jeff Cooper did the first article in Guns and Ammo Magazine on the 10mm in 1989, with an initial prototype Colt Delta Elite, with Pachmayr grips on it.
Any way you cut it, 10mm's need to be big, heavy handguns. That's what contains high intensity handgun cartridges. S&W 10mm autos are some of the beefiest, best built 10mm's ever to come down the pike.
Market for one? Might want to check "Gunbroker", "Auction Arms", and "GunsAmerica" for supply and demand on that. They are going for alot more now, than they did, when they were new. And the sellers are getting what they are asking for them.

Thanks for the feed back.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who appreciates the 10mm. Isn't it funny how the gun we sold is the one we miss. I had a Colt Delta Elite 10mm and traded it on a 44 mag. Now that I'm really appreciating the 1911 guns, just bought a Springfield EMP 40 that is my new favorite, I really regret selling that Colt. It shot really nice and wasn't that much bigger than the 45 ACP if memory serves me. Well 'Too many guns too little time.'

Delta and Dan Wesson Commander 10's for me. 1006 is on my list -- just can never seem to find one when I have the $$.

Sounds like we are about the same age and have been a fan of the 10MM just as long. I think the large size of the 1006 gives an impression it weighs more than it does. The 1076's weight is in the same ballpark of a steel frame 1911 and as you have pointed out many carry the steel frame 1911. My point to the OP is the weight in a good holster a belt is not that much of a big deal.

My current 1006

Former 1006 that I purchased about 2 years ago for a cool $350. Eventually sold it after picking up my current Novak Sighted 1006.

My 10s are the 1076 and the 1026. I kind of like the Sig-like decocker. I also feel that the 10mm might be the only semi auto that will serve as defense against large dangerous game, mainly because it will put out a fast heavy solid slug for max penetration.
As a combat gun I don't think one could do much better, you can't get the velocity out of a 45 ACP without a lot of extra pressure. I have the 610 also in 3" and 4", but for serious social encounters the auto would be my choice. They weigh in about like a steel 1911, and holster about the same way. My favorite holster is the Askins Avenger type by any of a number of makers, or a "Pancake" style which helps distribute the weight. Of course IWB will do well also, but I don't do IWB.

Could you tell us what holster you have there? Sorry sigarms229, I just found the answer in another post by you.

R Grizzle Leather "Country Boy". He's a regular poster on sigforum under the name Country Boy. His holsters are amazing. He had to order the mold to make mine and didn't wince, complain or charge me a dime extra. Oh, its actually a 4506 mold as they are identical in size.

The Smith & Wesson 3rd Gen Series 1000 (10mm) pistols are my favorite handguns.

Here are my 1026 and 1076 KSP Issue. The 1076 is my everyday carry pistol, most often worn in the Simply Rugged Cuda holster shown.

actually the 1006/1076 are not similar to the delta. colt just chambered the regular old 1911 to 10mm without strengthening the frame. this resulted in some of them cracking the frame. the S&W was strengthened and never had that problem. and yes i had a delta that cracked after only about 500 rds

If I were heading for something serious I would carry my 1006. Naturally, as the old Sheriff said I would also take a rifle.
I have three 10mms, for carry when the weather permits concealment I prefer the 1076, but the adjustable sights and bit longer barrel give me confidence that if the job can be done with a handgun, the 1006 and the proper Double Tap ammunition will see me through. I am not in large bear country.
IMO the 1911 based pistols (I have a Kimber Custom Target) are fun at the range but whether they would hold up to long serious HD work is a question.

Here are my 2 10mms , took me 2 years of hunting to get them . I would still like to get a 1911 platformed 10mm and I ferverently pray that S&W would produce the M&P in 10mm .

A buddy of mine is going to pick up his 1006 this coming weekend. Please keep in mind that I live in the Netherlands, and that actually means you will NEVER EVER find another 1006 EVER overhere unless you go through the trouble of importing one. (Okay, never ever ever might be a bit exaggerated) Realy can't wait to join him to the range with that canon. I myself have a 645 and totally love it. Anyways, his 1006 is fitted with a compensator. Is this Performance Center work? I'll try to post a picture of it later.

I'm the buddy ;) my name is Daan and i'm from the Netherlands also.

Here's a picture of the 1006, i'll post other picture's this weekend.
