I've been unemployed since Dec 31st after the Case dealer I worked for went belly up. I'd sold heavy equipment for years and it was a good living...put the kids through college and paid off the house. Anyway, I've kind of hit a brick wall trying to find a job at 58. After applying to Lowe's several times I finally got a call tonight wanting me for a "seasonal" job that may or may not turn into part-time which may or may not turn into full time. My question for any employees is how is the insurance? Affordable? A decent plan? There may not be any Lowe's folks here so if not please disregard. Thanks.

I don't work for them but any foot in the door is a good start. It gives you a chance to show them how much they need you. Go for it.

I'm not a Lowe's employee and I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night but I do have a good friend that is a zone manager at Lowe's.
Tom started as a floor sales person or whatever they call it. He's been there about 5 years and in his 3rd year he learned he had cancer.
He went through about 6-9 months of treatment, was cleared by his doctors and went back to Lowe's as soon as he could.
His medical bills were way up in the thousands of dollars and he was very impressed with the coverage.
Then there's the employee discount...

My ex worked there. The insurance at the time was BCBS and was pretty good. They like working temps as they can cull out the ones they want to keep. Wear comfortable shoes (where's Lee Barner when you need him?) as those cement floors are hard on 58 year old feet. I suspect that you will know a lot more about the merchandise than the college temps they hire.

Almost all of the full time people at my local Lowes started out as part time or temps. I know a couple people who climbed the ladder from seasonal to supervisors. Sounds like a pretty good place to me.

Hell .. concrete was rough on my 40 year old feet even when they were only 27 years old.

I started at Lowe's as a temporary part-timer. Three years later I'm still there, still part-timing though I've been offered full-time many times. I don't know that there's any left of the bunch I hired in with, due to quits and a layoff. I only have the vision coverage to supplement my retiree coverage from Ford, but I don't have any complaints -- except that my feet hurt.

Turnover is high at Lowe's. With 3 years in, I'm second in seniority in my department.

Thanks for the replies and advice. I breezed through 2 of their interviews today and have 1 more tomorrow and a drug test. The pay is lousy but it seems that's the only way in plus I won't feel like a deadbeat on unemployment. AND I can ride my motorcycle to work...I could never do that as a sales rep.

Well...interview #3 went well. I start April 1st in the indoor lawn and garden department. The store manager told me I could have as many hours a week as I wanted or could stand and IF I show him I want to work he'll try to fast track me to full time.

Congrats BigCat and good luck to you.

As s sidenote; There is an individual who works the electrical department in our local Lowes. Great big, bearded fellow in his 60's who has one of the nastiest personalities of anyone in a sales/customer service position that I've ever encountered. He's gruff, impatient, condescending, short tempered and has a knowledge of all things electrical that you would hardly believe! He's been working there for a few years and I believe that he can instantly find most any component in that department blindfolded and explain it's exact function/use/application.

Always interesting/aggrevating/amusing/infuriating/entertaining to have the cantankerous bastid wait on me!!! And I never pass the opportunity to ask him about something!!! LOL!!!

Congrats!!! The folks in the receiving department at Lowe's always seem to be happier (and nicer) than those at almost any other store I've delivered too, especially Home Depot. I think you'll enjoy it, and the boss has already told you how to get a full time job.

I was a Zone Manager / Assistant Store Manager in Marshall Texas for about three years. It's a pretty good organization as retail big box stores go.

Insurance was BCBS and I believe they have a 90 day waiting period after you become full time.

Pay close attention in training and learn to do "special orders" You will make good spiffs on those. Try to move to the appliance department as soon as you can. That's where the real money is.

I moved 'down' to appliance sales specialist and increased my salary by $10,000 in commissions over what I made as an assistant store manager!

Good Luck...

I worked at the Jackson Tennessee Lowe's around 10 years ago and I have nothing but praise for them and the managers that I worked for. As was stated the pay isn't the greatest and the concrete is hard but the key word here is (pay). Some folks out there would love to have that job. Good luck.

Most places like working temps these days so they can weed out the S-Birds. Being a family forum you know what I mean. Good luck and thanks for being a working man.
