My Dad just ordered an M&P R8 from a local gun shop but not obligated to buy. He's not new to S&W revolvers. He owns a few pre-lock classics in .357. But, he decided it was time to get a new one. What do you think of the R8? Dad's read reviews but has never fired one. Anything to look out for? I think it looks like a sweet 8-shooter and just want to hear from some owners. Any recommendation on a light for the rail? Moon clips? Holster? If this has been posted before, maybe a link to the previous thread. Thanks.

I've got a 627 Pro Series and love it.

Get ready for the wait though, I had mine on order for 6 months gave up and waited for one to pop up on Gunbroker at a reasonable price. I've heard its close to a year wait on anything performance center right now (which includes the pro series I got).

Good luck.

Hey thanks. They told him most likely before the end of the year (2 months). We'll see

I love my R8 bought it used the previous owner put fiber optic sights on it. I liked it so much I just bought a TRR8 off of gun broker. The 8 shots seem to have a real short trigger stroke and I am hooked on them this will be my fourth.

I shoot mine with a C-more railway red dot sight. It has worked flawlessly!

Love mine! No issues at all. The DA trigger is very nice! Shooting 357 is a breeze with the heavier front end. It accepts moon clips but you do not have to use them which is a plus.

Don't have one, shot one, want one. A friend owns the one I shot, and I agree with above comments............super DA trigger.

I bought mine used from a member here. They do come up often for sale in the classifieds so you may have a better chance here than getting one new from your dealer unless you want new. Mine was barely used and I got it for a great price. I rather deal with people on here than Gun Broker.

Bought mine used from GB about 3 weeks ago and had to send it to S&W for a little TLC. Had it out this past weekend and ran 38 spl reloads through it. I'm using a Burris FastFire II sight on it and like the small profile of the reflex sight. As folks already stated trigger is very nice and I found accuracy to be terrific!

If your father is looking for a new one, I'd take a look on GB since there are 7 or 8 new ones for sale at this time. Why wait the 2 months?

Below is my M&P R8.

Groo here
I have had a TR R8 for a number of years [ lost it to dad, his deer gun]
It is one of the most accurate and easy shooting guns .
Even though it is lighter weight , I find the balance and grip size to be
better than most steel frame guns, and for hunting and long range
shooting once you shoot the 5in you woll not go back.
Ps I have had little luck with the moon clips [ unlike 45acp- Fantastic]
But you don't need them .

Nuthing Fancy has a pretty extensive review on this gun. His videos are really long but, full of good info.

Hey thanks for the great replies! Looks like a sweet revolver. That 5" barrel gives it a balanced look. I can't wait to go shoot it with Dad in a couple of months. Yeah he won't buy anything online. He's in his late 70s and buys 'old school'. Can't blame him.

Keep in mind many sellers are commercial entities and offer an inspection and refund policy. It's no difference than buying from any other on line store in effect. By paying buy credit card you also have the right to contest the charge if not treated fairly. Yes the credit card results in a 3% additional charge but that's cheap insurance... Just saying.

I'm telling you the wait is going to be closer to a year than 2 months if your LGS ordered it from their distributer when your dad placed his order. I ordered my 627 Pro Series which follows the same production schedule as the Performance center guns at the beginning of April. Last month I talked to a Smith rep via PM's on AR15.com who told me that back orders on the performance Center/Pro series guns are at about the one year mark. I ordered my 627 through one of if not the largest gun store in the south east (Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna Ga) with as many guns as they sell I would think they would be near the top of the list for Smith. After talking to the Smith rep that week I found one on Gunbroker bought it and cancelled my order and had the gun in hand for about $50 cheaper even after shipping and the FFL transfer fee than the order I had. I had never purchased a gun online due to the perceived hassle, from now on I will research prices on gunbroker go to the LGS and if they don't have what I want at the price I can get it for I will buy it online.

I try to support the LGS as ofter as I can but my last 4 or 5 purchases have been on GB since there is more an available selection on GB and typically cheaper.

I guess I've been lucky. Got a performance center competitor from my LGS when I ordered it from them in less then 4 days. Would love to add one of these in my collection tho!

I want one in the stainless model with the wooden grips. I have fired one and it was fantastic for balance and trigger feel.
