About 5 years ago I did away with my T B I in my V8 88 Dakota and put a Holley 4 BBL and Mopar Performance Ingintion System in it. I have been thinking about going with a MSD Ready to Run System . I like the idea of no ballest resistor , having no orange box and having only 3 wires to hook up.. Is the MSD worth getting or should I just keep what I have.?

MSD makes very good stuff and they stand behind their products. Anytime you can eliminate the blasted ballast resistor do it! I worked on Mopars for 27 years and if the car i was driving had a ballast resistor I always kept 2 in the glove box. Terry
 
Man, you threw me for a loop here. When you said Mopar I thought you were talking about the '60's and some pretty wild rides. I can't help you with your question but in high school I had a '68 Fury with a 383 2bbl carter carb. The throats on that carb were big enough to throw oranges down. It had a 275 to 1 diff, a torquflite auto trans and G78-14 bias ply tires and why I didn't get killed driving that thing is beyond me. Starting from a stop with it in drive and mashing the gas pedal to the floor it would shift from first to second at 45 and from second to drive at 90. I walked that speedometer past 120 many times and have no idea where it ended. The only other car I owned that would pass cars on a two lane like that one was a thunderbird with a 460. Just jam and go. Cars sure seem a lot safer to me now but at my age I don't drive like that anymore. Good luck on your project.

My reaction also. I had visions of Coronets, R/Ts, Chargers, Darts, GTXs, Road Runners, Barracudas, et. al., with those tough-looking square lines, 340s, 383s, 440s and 426s. Those were the days.

I have a 2010 Challenger and a 2008 Ram 1500....my favorite thing about either one is that I don't have to wrench on them!!
 
Well, let's see, 600+ hp '70 Plymouth Duster 340 that would run 1/8 mile (length of our strip in Jacksonville) in about 7.8 seconds plus a 500+ hp '73 Roadrunner 440 with the pollution control motor rebuilt using 1968 heads plus other goodies. Both with Turbo Action transmissions built by Paul Forte himself. Both had the drag racing transmission except that the Roadrunner didn't have the reverse valve body and only 2000 rpm stall versus 4000 rpm stall for the Duster. Duster was race only...roll cage, one seat, battery in trunk, 5 gallon fuel tank in trunk, etc. Roadrunner was street car and my ballast resistor was mounted on the inside fender well for easy access next to the Accel Super Coil. So yeah, I am (or was) Mopar guy. Now to answer your question, MSD has always been quality and if you can eliminate that ballast resistor, do it. I'm trying to remember but isn't it ARCA that issues the ignition systems to the competitors each week at the track and don't they use MSD systems?

Terry, affirmative on the spare ballast resistor in the glove box and with the 440, a spare set of belts in the trunk.

Don't do it! MSD is great stuff. All I ever used in race car.

The "ready to run" distributor ( unless they changed it)
has a ****NON SERVICEABLE MODULE*****
This means if the ignition module inside the distributor craps out on the road somewhere, YOU ( or a mechanic) CANNOT CHANGE THE MODULE. THE WHOLE DISTRIBUTOR has to come out and GO BACK TO MSD. They screwed up bad with this.

My suggestion would be to try a Mallory.

1974 Plymouth Scamp, with 440 and torque flight from a 1972 Newport. Has had some cam work done. I can't answer questions, belongs to gearhead son who works for Roush.
 
I had a few Mopar's as a kid. When I was 16 I had a 76 Duster that was en ex-drag car, then a 79 Aspen daily driver with a slant six, but my favorite was my 71 Duster Swinger with a 318 that was quick and just fun to drive. I was in the process of restoring it when some kid pulled out in front of me on a bike and I rolled it. I miss that car alot. It's original color was plum crazy with a black vinyl top with black stripes.
 
I am sorry for the disappointment guys... I love the old Mopars from the 60's and 70's. I was too young to drive them and now those old beauties are a small fortune ,my dream car is a 67 Barracuda Fastback,but for now my Dakota fits the bill and it has never let me down. Thanks for the help.
