Any pipe smokers left?

I've got a dozen or so pipes in my collection and still smoke them once a month. I smoke Borkum Riff Whisky, a few custom blends I got at the Tobacconist, but oddly enough I actually really like Sir Walter Raleigh and Prince Albert which are both "el cheapo - drug store brands". I just got a can of the formally discontinued Edgeworth and have been enjoying that too. The less expensive pipe tobacco's don't bite your tongue like some of the aromatic ones do.

Count me in for Borkum Riff.

My father, a carpenter by trade, always said "Never hire a pipe smoker. They spend all their time fiddling with their pipe." He was right.

I smoked a pipe for years. I had a couple of dozen of them, some quite expensive. I bought my tobacco from a tobacco shop. I only had a problem with "bite" when I first started. After that it never bothered me again.

It tended to be an "outdoor sport" for me. Especially during deer season. I loved to be on a deer stand, with my pipe. Did it scare the deer? I don't know. I figured if they could smell to the tobacco smoke, they could smell me anyway. Big deal. I still killed a deer once in a while. I have more memories of early fall mornings, with the sun just cracking the trees, a cup of coffee from a thermos in one hand, and my pipe in the other than I do of the deer I killed.

During the summer, I didn't have enough pockets to keep up with all that "stuff." Pipe, lighter, tamper, tobacco pouch. I put it up until the weather cooled mostly.

When my wife quit smoking after her ruptured aneurysm, I quit the pipe also. I have no idea what happened to them. Probably went to Goodwill, or the flee market.

Long Ago I smoked pipes. Still have several Savinelli Autographs and a Dunhill.
Pipes CAN be kept alight with care and practice.
The pipe shop would have contest two or threes times a year for LONGEST smoke.
Contestants were given their choice of 3 grams tobacco and 2 wooden matches.
Only allowed to use the second match within for first minute. LAST SMOKE WINS.
Winning times were usually over 30 minutes - often over 45 minutes.
I won a few pipes - including a FINE DUNHILL.

The most expensive pipe I bought turned out to be the biggest bargain.
An absolutely fantastic straight grained Savinelli Autograph.
I kept putting off the first smoke. Still have not smoked it.
It became a bargain because of the sales resistance it produced.
I would see pipes in various shops and KNOW that I had a better pipe at home that was still SMOKED.

I smoke once or twice a day, used to be cigars most of the time and a pipe only some of the time. Now it's a pipe once or twice a day, and the few cigars I haven't smoked are getting old. Tongue bite used to be a problem when I first started out, but I found out slow easy smoking makes that go away. Also a different brand/type of tobacco can burn hotter or cooler. I tried a lot of brands and types of pipe tobacco. McClelland makes some really good pipe tobacco and I really like several of the blends they make. Their specialty being Virginia, either blended with other tobaccos or straight up. Lots of pipe and tobacco review web sites, where I learned about the different types and brands. I've pretty much settled on McClelland for my pipe though. Pipes are kind of like guns; you start with one and before you know it there are a bunch of them hanging around the house.

I quit smoking twenty-five years ago after forty years of very heavy cigarette use--two to three packs a day, mostly three.

I smoked pipes and cigars off and on, sometimes sticking with a pipe for a while. But I quit when I realized that by smoking them as fast as I did cigarettes, and inhaling them deep into my lungs, I was doing at least as much damage as I was with cigarette smoke. It helped me get to my present stage 3 COPD.

After all these years I find the smell of cigarette or cigar smoke unpleasant: but I have to say that good pipe tobacco burning smells pretty good even now.

We see some discussion of cigars and cigar smokers but nothing about pipes and pipe smokers. I’m talking about tobacco pipes, not pipes for other substances.

My grandfather was a pipe smoker. So was an uncle.

As a 7 year old, I briefly experimented with my uncle’s pipes. That adventure ended badly: he discovered my experiment and did me one better: he loaded up a pipe and had me smoke it. It’s the first time I remember throwing up.

This morning I was going through a box of odds and ends I bought at an auction for $2.50. Among other cool odds and ends, it contained several old tobacco pipes that got me thinking about experimenting again.

Any guidance? Technique? Recommend tobacco?

As cool as it looks to smoke a pipe, it can’t have disappeared entirely can it?

How about a pipe smoking revival?

RPG ,

You asked for guidance so I'm gonna give it to you !

You did not mention smoking anything besides a pipe so I am gonna assume that you are not now a smoker . I am and have been for over 50 years so I feel qualified to say what I'm gonna say ,.....Ready ??

Don't start .

I enjoy it but it's killing me and it is such a large part of my life and has been for so long that I have not been able to completely quit . I quit a 4-5 pack a day (Camels , Luckys ,Home Runs , and Chesterfields) habit about 15 years ago and I mostly smoke my pipes on rare occasion anymore but I still smoke 10 Corona sized cigars a day . I got stage2 Copd , 2 leaky valves in my heart and 40 % blockages in my chest and 60 % in the arteries in my neck . On top of this I have two fine young sons that watched me smoke all of these years and now have taken to it themselves . If you are 80 years old and wont smoke very often find a tobacco shop that specializes in pipes and have them show you the right way to load and smoke your pipes . If you are still a young man with good lungs and especially if you have impressionable young children ,......Throw them away ! I started with cigaretts at the ripe old age of 7 and the pipe and cigars at 15 . Don't be dumb as a 7 year old .

I smoked a pipe for a few years, my dad smoked a pipe up until he died. I used to roll a cigarette every so often but it seems like around the late 70's early 80's if the cops saw you with OCB's or zigzag papers they jumped to the conclusion that you were a doper and get you for having paraphernalia and arrest you. Also the drug dopies in this part of the country have got it where you can't buy any decent sinus medicine. Jeff

...my Dad smoked a pipe...I was fascinated with it...I would swipe it when he wasn't around and ride my tricycle with it hanging out of my mouth...

...one day...here he comes...oh oh...he pulled the pipe out of my mouth...and stuck a brand new one in...from then on I had my own pipe for tricycle riding...just didn't taste the same though...

...I can't believe I found this picture...yeah...that's me...

Have to agree here. If you don't already smoke, I can't see any benefit in purposefully trying to get addicted.

My Grandpa and Papa smoked pipes. There was a picture of me in a crib with a pipe in my mouth. My Mom would tell me that kids would prank call drug stores and ask "do you have Prince Albert in the can?" A positive reply got "then let him out." Though I smoke cigars, I never smoked a pipe after a few bowls. When I smell cigarette smoke in the morning, I like the smell. If I could have three cigarettes a day and not be back buying a pack a day, I would.

I’ve been smoking a pipe since the 80’s, if you’re serious then you need to spend on decent pipes. Tobacco is all about personal taste, I like an Aromatic for it’s smoothness and flavor.

Be forewarned it takes some time to learn the art of packing, lighting and smoking but if you Have the time and money it’s very therapeutic and rewarding.

I quit smoking about 30 yrs. ago. I used to smoke a Dunhill mixture, Balkan Sobranie and Rattray's Black Mallory. I recently found a box containing my old used pipes, mostly Savilelli, Dunhill and GBD. Is there any market for used pipes?

I use to smoke and collect pipe tobacco, speaking of Balkan Sobranie, I once found 5 unopened tins of it at antique mall, $3 each. Sold it on ebay for $300 each

Yes there is a market for them. They call them estate pipes, and several of the online pipe sellers buy and sell them. smokingpipes.com is one of them.

I smoke pipes, Peterson, corn cob, Savinelli and some Mexican made pipes that work good. Mostly I enjoy Mac Baren original choice, seven seas and vanilla. Also Borkum Riff, and some mixtures I buy from Cup o' Joes a tabaco shop from NY, and some mixtures from Iwan Ries (Chicago).

If you happen to be in Chicago I suggest you visit Iwan Ries shop in 19 S Wabash Ave. It doesnt matter if you are not a smoker. The shop is a time travel to the 20'S it is a very beautiful place.....heaven on earth for us pipe smokers.
