Is there any reason NOT to get the 7 shot species of 686 instead of the 6 shot version??

Nope and a lot of people love them but my only one is a no dash with 6 round cylinder. It and a Model 617 are the youngest S&W revolvers I own.

I have a seven shot 4" , a 7 shot mountian gun, and a older 6 shot 2 1/2 inch. All three 686's are excellent revolvers that will last a life-time.
I guess my favorite is the regular 686 + 7 shot. Its a late model but just seems accurate and balanced right.

Have one with a 2.5 inch barrel. Really like it and feel it gives you one more round just in case.

I have two 686+'s (2.5" and 4") and I love them. The only reason I can think of is if you plan to do IDPA or some other competition. They generally only allow 6 round revolvers.

Other than that I would go for a 7 shot over a 6 shot.

To carry - 7 shot, for a match gun - 6 shot. I have both and that is the way I use them.

I have a late model 686+ with 3" barrel. It is accurate, reliable, and has good balance. Somehow it slipped throught S&W QC, with no factory defects whatsoever. The downside, I had to buy some 7 shot speedloaders.

. . . The only reason I can think of is if you plan to do IDPA or some other competition. They generally only allow 6 round revolvers. . . .

For IDPA you can compete with a 7 shot, but may only load it with six rounds. Stay with a 6 round cylinder if you think you might shoot IDPA with it. Remember 4" or shorter barrel for IDPA.

Any 686 is a fine gun to own and enjoy.

I rented a 7-shot 686 once, and on more than one occasion ejected a live round out of the cylinder. :o

But I suppose you'll get used to it.

Umm... because you want to reload more often?

Ironically, I was just contemplating my modest .357 collection, and realized that I've got an 8-shot (627), a 7-shot (686+), and a 5-shot (649-3), but no 6-shooter... What's up with that??

I have a 3" CS-1 6 shot and an original 7 shot Mtn Gun. I like them both. I like having the 7th round. I would like to have a 627 Bloodsport 8 shooter!

Minconrevo,

Thanks for clearing that up. I actually was aware of that but did not word it very well.

Thanks,

I have to add this. There are some departments that don't allow 7 shot 686's for their officers, but do allow 6 shot versions. They can't think out side the box and ask why one would want a seven shot revolver. Of course, the same outfits have no problem with a 5 shot M60. I have a 3" 686 7 shot that started out as a 6 shot RSR special. I bought a 4" 7 shot, swapped the parts and had no difficulty selling the now 6 shot 4". My other is a 386ScS I acquired a few years ago. Back when LE carried revolvers, the 7 shooter would have been grand. Bob!!

So if you have a Model 60 and a 686+ you average out to 6 shots-no big deal

Don't buy one! I made the mistake of buying a 686P Mountain Gun. Darned if that purchase didn't cost me another $500 because I liked it so much I had to get a 2-1/2 inch 686P. :D

Guess it's all been said above but they handle the exact same as a 6 shooter. Mine is a 2.5" prelock, forgot the dash, but it's among. the last prelockers made. WAY more accurate than I can hold it

You won't be disappointed with ANY of them, prelock, MIM, postlock, whatever...they're great shooting revolvers.
