Any vodka drinkers?

I used to be a hard core Vodka guy. My go to everyday drink were always Smirnoff/Svedka/Finlandia/Russian Standard. I'd buy Cristal, Grey Goose, Russian Standard Gold as the one for occasional drinks. This was until I discovered real, good Scotch/whiskey. Unfortunately I also discovered that I'd get intense headaches from them regardless of how much I drank (,one shot or one bottle). Then I discovered Tequila, real tequila! And it was love at first sight!!! The smell, the taste of aged anejo, and NO HANGOVERS OR HEADACHES!! NONE, NEVER! ZERO!!!!! It's all I drink now if I'm buying! Still zakuski though, that never changed

For many years anejo tequila was all that I drank in the way of hard spirits. I was introduced to good tequila by a friend who has since passed away. I keep a bottle of Don Julio 1942 on top of the bookshelf for a occasional trip down memory lane. One of the things I always liked about good tequila is the lack of a hangover if you overdid it. I wish you could still get the old Porfidio brand of tequila. That was some very good stuff at a fair price.

I've had a bottle 1942 on several occasions. Good stuff!

After all this talk of alcohol and food I couldn't hold it in anymore! Had to have some with dinner!

Here is Espolon tequila, half decent tequila, with Hungarian Salo

Very nice! Were do you find your salo? I have only been able to find it online and would love to try some.
Local "Russian" market. There are about 5 or 6 markets with one being more like a supermarket. There are roughly 200,000, if not more, Soviet expats here so ....plenty of stores

Svedka's the go to vodka in my house, inexpensive and very, very good. Russian Standard is also very good. Greys Peak, Titos and Amsterdam (cheap stuff-go figure) too. Expensive ones like Ciroc (real good), Kettle1, Grey Goose are good too.

I'm seeing a few others I may try. The only one listed that I can't stand is Absolut, I don't know exactly what it is, but it's disgusting to me. And no flavored stuff, I can add mixers.

My daughter put me on to a great Vodka made from potatoes. It's called Cold River. It is in the medium price range but I like it better that some that cost a lot more. Can't get it around here but it is available in South Florida if that'll help ya.

Excellent stories, all! I may have to take a trip over the the European food store in KC some time I'm heading through on 70 for some salo and red caviar. :)

Caviar! :)

My Sunday breakfast! 2 slices of bacon, a slice of salo, half an avocado, 2 - 3 eggs and salmon caviar on the eggs!! Turkish coffee!!

Arik,

I still have one of those little brass pots that I brought back from Turkey 20 years ago, to make the turkish coffee in. Over there, they put them in a container of sand that they heat to the proper temperature in order not to overheat, and to more quickly heat the water. American coffee grinders do not usually grind fine enough, but some will. I haven't made any for a number of years, though. Wonderful stuff!!

Best Regards, Les

Les,

I've heard of this but don't have one. I used to get my coffee from a real coffee shop. A real, legit coffee (and tea) place with beans from all over the world. Unfortunately they closed. :( So no when my sister goes down to the Italian market (in center city Philadelphia.mote than just Italian food) I have her get me bags of coffee

Like many here I am a bourbon guy, my brother is a vodka drinker, when visiting him he has served me, Crystal Skull from Iceland. I found it to be smooth. One one of my visits to Kentucky I stopped at Buffalo Trace distillery, they were getting ready to release there vodka, Wheatley, the vodka we supposed to be distilled 12 times as that was supposed to give it'some clear crisp taste. I thought it was good so I bought a bottle and sent it to my brother, his wife like it and claimed through rest of the bottle as hers.

Lack of a hangover, you have got to be kidding!;)

Nope! I can, and have, drank copious amounts of tequila. I mean copious! Have yet to have a hangover. On the other hand, if I drink a bottle of Vodka, whiskey, rum, gin, cognac...etc....A hangover is guaranteed.

By the way, when I say tequila I mean real 100% tequila not what most bars pass of as tequila. There is a difference. 100% means just that...A 100% agave. The rest have 51% tequila and 49% corn liquor.

Vodka to me is like bottled water with a buzz. I confess, I am not a expert but I can't taste the difference. Now a good small batch bourbon...that I can discern.

Bluntly put, hangover equals flavor (at least a big part of it).

The major culprit of the unpleasant aspects of imbibing, like headaches and nausea, are so-called congeners, by-products that survive distillation, which however unfortunately also contribute to the characteristic flavors of, for example, whiskeys, so you need them.

If you distill and filter them all out, like in vodka production, bingo, much less hangover. Of course you also have to use more of your imagination to taste the "flavor".
