Is there any way to tell by the serial number where one of these C.A.I. "imports" was used? Like many I picked up a holster worn 4" that although looks rough is near new in internal action. I'm curious as to where it spent it's "youth." Ser# 3D48XXX

I checked in Catalog of S&W but didn't see anything that would indicate country that this was contracted to.

Thanks for your time.

The only way to really tell, IMHO, is to look for proof markings. I would suspect getting a factory letter would just indicate some distributor who sold it overseas.

Lately, I have seen a bunch of Austrian police and customs retired pistols. They have proof marks on the bottom of the barrel in front of the locking lug and sometimes on the trigger guard.

I'm sure if you posted pictures of anything you find there are people here that would help identify the country of origin.
