Big fan of the Browning BAR...have a Safari II in 7mm Rem Mag and a Shortrac in 7mm-08. Probably an overlap and kinda pointless, but have been eyeing up the detachable mag 308. Anybody have any experience with it or comments for that matter...

I had 2 Browning semi automatic hunting rifles caliber 30-06. The older one I bought used and it hand some nice scroll work of a hunting scene. The newer one was the Stalker version in flat black. I bought it new, discounted, because it had a 3 inch rub mark on the finish of the barrel. Both were very accurate and reliable.

I learned to never trust the safety. When stalking I would put the safety on, and with just normal slow stepping stalking I would find the safety disengaged when I believed it was on.

I sold the older one as part of the downsizing of my life. I've kept the stalker model, but do not stalk with it anymore.

I have a nice Belgian BAR in 243, from my now deceased father in law, who bought it and fired it three times, because he was issued one in '42 when he was part of the 32nd Infantry Division when they were able to take Buna back from the Japanese. He gave it up for a Garand when he couldn't keep it operating in the mud of that awful battle. I have read his letters from the fronts, and I read where he stated ".... the Japs are good fighters." And indeed they were tenacious and fought to the bitter end. It was an awful place to wage war. SF VET

I've had a couple of Belgian made BARs, both in . 30-06. Have one now, about to mount a 3.5-10x Leupold on it and may hunt with it some this year. They are solid rifles, and generally quite accurate.

I got around to mounting the scope today. Used Weaver-style bases and Burris Zee rings. Looked up the s. n., this one was made in1969. All Belgium made, not "made in Belgium assbled in Portugal".

A BAR in 30/06 is in my rotation of deer rifles......It gave a big 6 pt a dirt nap on August 22, 2022. I like it a lot. No recoil to speak of......Other rifles in rotation are bolt .280s. Levers in 444 Marlin/35/30-30. When I kill a deer with one rifle. It goes back in the safe and another comes out. BTW My BAR has only eaten my handloads since new.

I have a BAR in 30-06 that I've used to hunt deer in Kansas and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I developed a load using a mi-range charge of IMR 4064 and a 180 grain Speer bullet that groups under one inch when fired from a rest. This load also has resulted in four one-shot kills on large Whitetail bucks. The only downside of using this rifle is its weight. It is great for stand hunting, but too much to use when stalking all day.

Had an aluminum receiver .30-06 that I traded away ages ago. Neat rifle. Been looking for a modern one (camo pattern) in .300WSM as it's still a great caliber, but has fallen out of favor. At least it's not totally dead like the other WSMs...
