Anyone Change How They CCW w/Age?

I don't carry any gun near or close to that area of the back at the 3 to 6 o'clock period. You will have back and spine problems, period. I know and found out the hard way, duh. I'm old school Kentucky Guy. Back pocket. 38 in back pocket Hawk billed knife in front pocket. One could just wear bib overalls. Pockets on the big size and plenty of room year 'round. Think Kentucky my friend. I know I'm right.

Any old Railroaders in here? If so you know what I'm talking 'bout. Any old Kentucks here?

Think 'bout it

When I was younger I always carried a full sized steel pistol but as I get older I mostly carry my M&P9C

Don't wear a belt. Use suspenders. Use a clip-on or paddle type holster
that grips the fabric of your trousers tight enough that the holster won't
come out wrapped around the gun when you draw. The gun and holster
must be fairly light so as not to sag. The J Frame Airweight should be perfect. And that Doctor who told you your just old, get a new Doctor.
I'm not old. I'm only 81. Carry ever day. No pain.

I am new to carrying a "little friend," but at 73 and change I'm not new to much else. Right now, I am "kicking butt" healthy and active. I am waiting on the local sheriff to finish processing me for my cc permit, and then I plan to carry. Right now I shoot my f-s MP40 and love it. I know it's bigger than a lot of carry pistols but I love it dearly. I could get a shield or something similar but I just like the f-s MP40. Any suggestions on how to concealed carry the MP40? Or should I get a down-sized pistol? I won't be out in the world every day because we are pretty remote and don't go into town more 3 or 4 times a week. But when I do go into town I'm not interested in being a helpless old fart and victim.

Still carry the same hardware that's I've always favored; but the biggest change has been that I now need suspenders to keep my pants up. Should have done that years ago; so much more comfortable.;)
Me too, LOL! Suspenders make a huge difference. I still carry IWB/OWB at 4'oclock w/no problem and I will be 66 in two months.

I'm 78, with degenerative disk disease, sciatica, and arthritic hips and knees. I'm right-handed but my right leg is almost 3/4 of an inch shorter than my left. I walk with a cane and nowadays carry an oxygen cylinder in a backpack. I've carried an early 640 in a pocket holster for seventeen years--it's the most comfortable way for me, as I have the overhanging gut and Old Guy's Disappearing Derriere Disorder.

With Pachmayr Compacs and a light pocket holster, and loaded with 158gr. LSWCHP, the weight is around 26 to 28 ounces. I love the gun and will continue to carry it when I can, but there are days when the pain is too severe and the weight too much.

I'm saving my pennies for a 10 ounce (unloaded) LCP to carry on those days; but as the breakdown of my spine and joints progresses, I may find myself toting the little Ruger all the time.

One thing is certain: I won't step out my apartment door unarmed. If it has to be a little .380ACP, so be it.

Age (62 yo) finds me less willing to tough things out. I spent 30 years as a carpenter, hammer swinging, saw wielding, and humping materials day in and day out.

Now, my main tools are my cell phone and computer (project management, sales, estimating, etc.) And, since I have a fair amount of public contact, concealment is a priority. So, a lightweight J frame in a pocket of my 511s is perfect. Used to be a 649, then it was a 642, went to a LCP for spell, back to the 642, and now its a 342Ti.

The trend is lighter guns in more comfortable places, no question about it!

Yup! Welcome To Age 70...Me, too!

Just curious; I started out as a rookie cop carrying off-duty, holster on my belt. Went on that way for years until my hip began to bother me (after retirement) and switched to IWB/appendix until about three years ago. Now it's pocket w/holster full time. If I tighten my belt to accommodate either IWB or OWB my hips and back seem to go into spasm and hurt something awful. This only takes a few minutes and I've been to the doctor. I was just told, after X-Rays and other exams, I was getting old (70 later this year). Anyone else experience the same or similar problems? Checking w/fellow retirees some report hip pain, on the side they carried the weapon, similar to mine.

No big deal, I've learned that I can only carry a light J frame, or the M&P .380 and I'll always be armed. I practice w/my carry gun and qualify for LEOSA every year w/scores in the high 90s.

Airweight Chief or Detective Special with Herretts Shooting Ace grips in a Kramer horsehide holster in the right front pocket and a speed strip in the left front pocket...yup! Most comfortable of all.

come to think of it - as I am getting older I have been carrying more often and more often at home. I alternate between IWB at 4 o'clock (small 1911) and a j-frame in right front pocket.

First 35 years of my career: "N" Frame 4-6 inch revolver on and off duty
Next 10 years of my career : full size Semi-Auto on and off duty with 2 inch "J" frame as secondary.

Retirement: Glock Model 17 or Model 26 with 2 inch "J" frame as secondary.

Presently considering replacing 2 inch "J" Frame with Glock Model 42

I've got a shoulder holster coming and might try my J frame again over a tee shirt and a light cover shirt.

I'm 65. EDC used to be an early 640 in an ISP at 2 o'clock along with a speed strip in a pocket. I've upgraded due to today's state of meanness. Current is a Glock 19 at 3:30 in a Sparks Summer Special along with a Galco double spare mag pouch OWB on the other side. For when I want I have a super comfortable Lobo Leather ISP for 4" K-frames. A couple strip loaders go in a pocket when I tote a K revo.

First of all, congrats to all you guys in your 7th and 8th decades. You made it so you're doing something right. I'm a retired LEO and 67 years. I recently "traded" my EDC from a Smith J-Frame 342 Titanium Airlite Ti to a 9 Shield because my CS45 broke (still have leftover parts). I have a CTC Green Laserguard sight on it so I can only use a IWB Blade Tech holster. If you guys are using a holster with the plastic standard clip (they come off with the draw sometimes) please check-out Utiliclip as an option. My holster does pull the belt down a bit so I just adjust it at appendix carry. The Shield is mostly slide top heavy since the frame weight almost nothing. I'm trying to get a belt carry for the holster but it will have to be a custom at this time. I appendix carry and sometimes carry over the hip. Holster fits well either way.

I am also in process of changing how I carry after years of a G27 in Crossbreed SuperTuck at 4:00. Now to due chronic back issues from job related injuries I have moved to aM&P Shield and searching for a more comfortable carry option.

'm 52 and retired. I've changed, but it doesn't have anything to do with physical issues. I'm now focused on ending the fight immediately, if I choose to engage. I'm not worried about reloads and carry methods and bullet weight and configuration and whatever else generates endless and repeating threads in the Concealed Carry forum. If we're gonna go, it's gonna be over quickly. Like I like to mention when somebody gets their beer muscles up . . . I'm not saying I'm not going to ER, I'm saying you're definitely going . . .

Don't get out much any more. Because of the limited scope of my travels, a Shield or Model 49 snubby come along. I'll upgrade if, as J.B. Books said, "If my insides tells me to." Till then, I'll opt for less weight, more comfort.

On the job it was usually something full size and steel either OWB in a pancake or IWB in something by Sparks or Bianchi, both at around 3:30 to 4 o'clock.

The IWB carry (M39 or Colt Lawman snub) eventually caused so many hip and back problems that I switched to a shoulder rig. Most of this time there was also a Colt Agent on my ankle and High Standard Derringer in my hip pocket.

I almost exclusively pocket carry now, in a Galco horsehide or a DeSantis Nemsis or Superfly, depending on the firearm, which is usually a 642 in the Galco or whatever .380 mouse gun fits my planned activities in the DeSantis. I occasionally switch to an OWB paddle when driving long distances due to the challenges of drawing from a pocket while seated.

There is too much of me in front of my appendix already to even consider adding a gun there.
