There is a difference between aware and afraid. I practice being the former but I'm not governed by the latter.

Pretty much how I go about life. I do mingle in large crowds periodically but for the most part the wife and I stick to kids, grandkids, and a few longtime friends. News (lame at best) and an addiction to the many social media platforms deeply fertilize the paranoia/fear in my opinion. You wake up with **** and go to bed with ****. If you want normalcy stop using the news/social platforms. When ad dollars start shrinking the product will change or go out of business.
I am aware this is a social platform.

I have no problems with NBC news. I do not do the social media **** or blog news junk. I think people can't tell the dif anymore between an editorial which is totally biased and potentially a bunch of speculation or lies and real news, you know the 5 w's-who what where when and why. I like Judge Judys line 'if it doesn't make sense it's probably not true' ie Jewish space lasers???a child sex ring run out of a pizza joint?? I stay informed, stay situationally aware when I am out. My phone is in a holster not in my hand. Don't be a sheeple applies to a lot of things, two of which are think for yourself and be responsible for your own safety.

Agreed!!!! Being almost totally up to date electronically, not including what I elect to not use or be up to date on, I have discovered that there many old TV shows, action shows in particular, that I never saw that are fun and easy to watch so I have cut my FOX News addiction by maybe 80% and I entertain myself instead. I get enough news from BLAZE to satisfy my right wing self without TV.

And I hate crowds. I have not really enjoyed crowds for a very long time. So I can easily stay away from almost everything.

Sadly, this year, after about 150 years, our local fair began wanding attendees. I won't be going. Interestingly, a massive fight amongst local ne'er do wells broke out on Saturday, the first night . . .

Afraid to be aware?

Had to leave a boat on the hard, to get some supplies from my truck, at a Riviera Beach yard that has had many issues with criminals at night.
My pistol was in my hand and the Canadian owners were surprised.
I had advised them about the problems, when they first called about service/installation of marine electronics, and told them best not to leave the boat at night, whether splashed or on the hard.

"Why do you need it in your hand and not in your pocket", was what they asked.
"Because the bandits already have it in theirs", was my reply.

Just remembered this gem.
GF and her buddies in Santa Monica were surprised when I showed up for a long weekend when I walked into the bar that her family owned.
They thought I'd be going to the concert at Altamont with my Airmen buddies.
We all had a bad feeling about that one as bad drug use had driven the flower children away, was what I told them.
Speedballers, one passed out with a hatchet, was what I saw after shooting smallbore at Berkeley.
I carried a 22LR auto in those days.

Anyone else apprehensive about being in large public, or private gatherings? I used to go out in public and not give it a second thought. Now I am not very comfortable in large public places with a lot of people. Don't get me wrong, I still go but seem to watch everyone much closer now, how they are acting and what they are doing. With so many mass shootings, beatings, car jackings etc. it just flat out scares me, mostly for my family. Used to carry sometimes and some places, now it always and everywhere. Should something breakout I'm heading for cover like everyone else but won't go down without a fight.

You are being aware of your surroundings and that is a good thing. I carry a fighting knife (folding, as that is all that is allowed here in California) besides being aware of my surroundings at least I could lay an ambush for an active shooter as I egress the area. In California, citizens DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO SELF-DEFENSE UNDER THE STATE CONSTITUTION!!!

I wish the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT would step in and ENFORCE our CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS HERE but I"M not holding my breath!!!

I feel situation awareness is my best defense in most cases. I will be going to my county fair this week, I go to concerts and live auctions.
Yes, there are places I avoid, such as certain areas of Minneapolis. Never again will I walk 3 blocks from the transit stop to my hotel after a concert.
I won't let fear control my life.
