Anyone like mechanical watches?

I had my great-grandfather's Burlington (Illinois) pocket watch converted into a wristwatch by the good folks at Vortic in Fort Collins, CO a few years ago. Later, I had another one of his pocket watches, a Waltham, done for my dad. It's so cool to wear a 103 year old family heirloom on your wrist!

I have an Elgin 21-Jewel B.W. Raymond pocket watch that was converted to a wrist watch by a group over in Ukraine. This was long before the war and sadly their business has since gone silent. It had been languishing in my display case until I read your post, so I took it out to wear for a while. It has a crystal on both sides so you can see the movement. My only gripe is that the case is absolutely not water resistant so I have to be extremely careful with it!

Questions for you watch guys;

1) What kind of strap should I put on the Bulova Accutron? It's a big chunky thing, I am just not sure what would look right. Now that I am getting to be a watch guy I fear I may actually wear it from time to time.

I put an age appropriate "Twist-O-Flex" on mine.

Yes.
My Seiko 5, while humble and hardly anything to brag on, is an interesting and useful timepiece.
I worked in Colombia back in the early 1970s and bought a Seiko 5 autowind there fairly cheap. I wore it until the late 1980s when it stopped running reliably. When I found out what it would cost me to have it repaired, it got demoted to the dresser drawer. Sold it on eBay maybe 15 years ago.

Invicta autowind watches use Seiko movements. I inherited one which runs fine and looks good, but a little too clunky for me to want to wear. Sort of a Rolex diver clone. Probably one of the best as it has a decent movement. Not a Rolex, but then it is only a few percent of a Rolex price.

I still have my father's Bulova Accutron, non-working. I haven't been tempted to get it repaired, doubt I would wear it if if I did.

Have you Omega Speedmaster fans seen the newest version with the white dial ? I think it is stunning. It is available only with the Sapphire sandwich setup and costs about a $1100 premium over the standard version. I don't wear my standard Speedmaster that often so it would be hard to justify buying another. And I don't have $8100 burning a hole in my pocket anyway.....

Sceva, Post #25, that knife that says Tidioute on it, is that from a souvenir shop or did they make watches up there? It's nice the way the edge is on that knife. Nice timepiece, too!

Great Eastern Cutlery. Makes knives under the GEC Brand ( Stainless and Carbon) Tidioute Iron Works brand (carbon Steel) and the Northfield Cutlery brand (stainless)

Small runs of very well made knives. The one shown is a # 06 model called the Pemberton and the shape is called a Coke Bottle. ( Doc Pemberton invented Coca Cola) from 2019

It's a nice watch, but I like the traditional Speedy in black myself.

It's amazing what treasures people overlook! I totally get the thrill of picking up something special without breaking the bank. I remember scoring a vintage Seiko at a flea market for just $20, and I still can't believe my luck! As for the Bulova Accutron, I think a classic leather strap would look great.

My latest, not high end, but definately the most in demand. My golfing watch GSTB-500 G-Shock

Took a few pics back when this thread was active, in looking through my pics I thought some of these might be of interest to you all (not for sale interest...).
Anyway, here's some of my favs..... (click on the pics for a larger view)

The first is a Hamilton Cape Horn automatic (was given to a friend since this thread was active - and I really miss it.. )

An early Omega bump wind auto (not sure of when it was made, but it's cool

And one of my all-time favs... this Omega is a bump wind auto, was given to someone retiring from the slaughter plant in 1949. Found this at a pawn shop in Renton, WA. Not sure if it began live here, but have found information that the area just south of Renton used to be called Slaughter, WA. Soooo, it might be from there, or migrated from another part of the US back after 1949

Enjoy.....

I haven't owned a mechanical (wind up) watch since I was a kid.
No high-end watches for me. I'm too hard on them, and don't go anywhere "dressy" enough to want to change watches.
To me a watch is a tool - not jewelry.
For decades I wore run of the mill Timex's.
For the last six months or so I haven't even been wearing a watch with a dial. I started wearing an inexpensive "smart" watch.
I like the way it pairs with my phone so I can see incoming texts, calls, alarms, appointments, etc. without having to pull out my phone.
It even has a snap-on screen protector so the face doesn't get scratched and scarred up.

I have a small collection of watches, but my three mechanical watches are from Rolex and Omega.

My best watch....

I have never had a mechanical watch that satisfactorily worked. I have a cell phone.

But first.... AAAAAAAARGH!!! Cell phones!!!!!

My best watch was a Benrus I had when I was about 18. I even had a Timex when I was a kid that kept great time.

Remember the ad?

"With a Benrus you have something better up your sleeve"

PS: Oh, something else. I went looking for my pocket watch and I'm afraid that it is in the pawn shop due to some problems with a very close relative.:(

I'm shopping for a replacement.

PPS: I still have my Grandfather's watch, see attached.

The teeth marks are from my aunt when she was small. My Mom was always peed off about it.

OP,I agree that the Longines and Omega are the tops of your collection!

I own those brands but different models.

Reading through this thread you guys have some amazing watches. I feel like my little pile of thrift shopped watches just can't compare, but I am having a lot fun with them because man, watches are just too good.

I've been trying to put together videos on the watches I have, thought you guys might like them, particularly the crazy Wyler my neighbors were throwing away:

And this gold Girard-Perregaux:

I tossed together a playlist with the other watches too

I have five nice but non-prestige mechanical watches slumbering in a dresser drawer. But the only watch I wear regularly is a Victorinox Swiss Army Quartz which is about 25 years old. It never needed any work beyond battery changes and is scary precise when it comes to timekeeping. I do on some occasions wear an Invicta Pro Diver if I need to dress up. From more than 18" away, most would mistake the Invicta for a Rolex Submariner. And it is also a very good timekeeper.

Wish I still had it today tick or no tick!!

My Dad gave me a new Helbros watch when he dropped me off at the Federal Building to report for basic training. First watch I ever owned.

I wore it for years until it stopped working, Reckon I tossed it when it didn't run.

Just another stupid thing I did in my youth.

I did what I threatened........

I still have the cell phone because I need it for my diabetes sensors, but I got a couple of vests and wore them and my pocket watch to church over Christmas. And I left the cell phone in the car.:D
