I love traditional single actions, but detest the 1st series "new model" Ruger Vaqueros for their actions. Safer, yes. Clumsier, also yes. It's hard to line up the chambers for loading and extraction. The traditional SAs and old model Blackhawks allow indexing and then reverse indexing to the point where the chambers automatically line up for loading and extraction. Not good to leave a loaded chamber under the hammer. Load one, skip one, load four, bring to full cock, lower hammer on empty chamber. Only disadvantage: 5 shots vs. 6.
On the other hand, the original Ruger Vaqueros and new model Blackhawks were built like tanks, and can take magnum-level .45 Colt loads easily. And they can carry 6 rounds safely.
My solution was to modify both my high-polish stainless Vaquero and my Bisley Vaquero with Ron Power conversion units, which allow loading at half-cock the traditional way, plus re-instating the reverse-indexing-to-load feature. 3 clicks to full cock rather than 4, but that's the only discernible difference from traditional SAs. And 6 rounds can still be carried safely.
For regular shooting, I feel the traditional grip suits me better. For hell-for-leather .45 Colt loads, the Bisley gives a better feel and I do think it alleviates heavy recoil a mite better.
Here are both of my Vaqueros at half cock to show the improved loading capability.
I wish the NEW Vaqueros and Blackhawks could handle magnum-level .45 Colt loads - I hope no one reads "Ruger only" loads to allow them to be loaded in the newer guns. That would be a definite potential for ka-boom.
