Anyone own a 9mm and .40 in a M&P?

After really liking the M&P in .40 caliber I'm considering adding a 9mm M&P to my (growing :D) gun collection. Is the 9mm worth adding? or should I buy another .40? I have a stack of 9mm's now (Ruger P series, Sig, etc) and would only add the M&P 9mm if it was just as good as my .40. Thanks for the help.

The M&P Compacts are essentially the same gun between the two calibers. I've swapped slides & barrels between a 40C and a 9C so I could use the thumb safety that turned up on the 9C. On that frame, the 9C is a lot more comfortable to shoot, but being a 1911 guy (my EDC is an Officer's sized 1911), all that really means is that the gun's got a bit more recoil, and is a little slower to put back on target.

I have a full size .40, too. As with the 9mm, the two are essentially identical (I'm not sure if the slide & barrel swap is possible - it should be, but somebody complained :)). The .40's almost as snappy as the small 1911's - although a tad less than the Compacts - in any case, easy to shoot. I don't have a 9mm full size, but an ancient M39 is a pussycat, and I would expect that the full sized M&P would be equally pleasant to shoot.

Since you're used to the .40, you will find the 9's a tad more fun, I think, but since they're also essentially identical, there's no challenge there. Just don't tell the spouse/significant other :D.... "Look what I found in the safe" almost works here.... (I had a few guns when I got married, a bit over 35 years ago, and inherited a few from a friend. My wife has no idea which are which, or what I bought afterwards.)

(Which was kind of funny one night some years ago when I was cleaning stuff in the dining room. I think I had four 1911's in pieces on the table. Her response was "heck of a jigsaw puzzle".... Kind of funny in it's own way, and it didn't work out as planned, but we had to go buy her a glucose monitor suddenly. I was hoping to go into the drug store and ask for something that the dog could work, but she decided to come with me.... The meter itself and the test strips are fine, but the fool lancet is way beyond her. WAY beyond.... My daughter's a nurse, and is trying, but....)

Anyway, I shall now put on my official Dogbert hat from my position as a Moderator on the Buckeye Firearms Association board, and COMMAND you to go buy more.... :D

Regards,

Pretty much some of what Stu said... if you like the 40, you'll love the 9. Buy one or buy a 9 conversion barrel and magazine for the 40. :)

I have both and like them equally. Bought the 9 for my 13 year old daughter and it was a pleasure to shoot, so I got the 40 for myself. No regrets, so I would say.... go get the 9!!

MP 40/9

I have a 40 MP FS and bought a SL 40/9 conv bbl. Very good . Now I have 2 cals with one gun. I have a 9 Pro 5" and a 9c.

I have a M&P 9 Pro now, and have a M&P 9c on the wait time, be picking up on Monday...

I just bought a 9Pro in 5 inch and a 40c. I bought a Storm Lake barrel in 9mm for the compact. I also bought a couple full size .40 mags and an couple of X-grips. I already have 5 FS 9mm mags which now can be used in both.

You can also buy a .357 SIG barrel for your .40 and run the same magazines. Options, options.

Resistance is futile. I'm thinking .45.

I have M&Ps

I got a M&P 45 with 4.5 inch barrel. :o I got it because I wanted a full size plastic 45 acp to go with my other 45 acp handguns. :o I ended up putting Apex Tactical parts in to smooth out the trigger. Then I loved it. So much so, got a 9mm M&P Pro to shoot USPSA production. :o Got more Apex Tactical parts. Finally I loved it. (An adjustable rear sight was needed.) Ths year I had to have a M&P 40 Pro to go with the others. :o More Apex Tactical parts. And a 357 Sig barrel.

Can't seem to stop buying toys for my M&Ps :D

It's really a sad story. :)

Yeah, but who is crying... ? ;)

I have a FS M&P40 and a 9L and like them both. If I were going to by a 9x19 I would probably buy a compact model, which might work for you, since you have a stack of 9s already. I suppose you could just buy a conversion barrel for your 40, but that would kind of spoil the fun, IMHO. :)

This is a really good positive thread... I love reading about our MP's and how much we enjoy them.. I have a few myself, like 6 including conversion barrels. I bought a ported 357 sig for my 40 compact, but don't see myself using it. Guess I just wanted to try it... anyone interested in buying it, pm me... :)

this is interesting.i always worried the extractor would not be reliable,as the diameter of the 40 is bigger than the 9.but it seems the switch is no problem,sw does not advise switching as the 40 and 9 would impact the firing pins different.and the extractors would not be the same.i guess thats all bs talk, so they would not be liable.
i did not know a 9mm factory barrel would work in a 40 slide or vise versa, because of barrel thickness.
the mp guns are awsome

9S AND 40S

I have had my 40 for about a year and absolutely love it. Bought a 9 a couple weeks ago and its a blast to shoot. My wife shoots the 9 really well. Both are 5" pro models:<)

Cool thread

I have had the 40 for some time and really like it. It's my daily carry. However, I was able to move from "Marksman" to "Sharpshooter" in IDPA by doing nothing more than getting and using a 9L in IDPA competition.

Got the 45 also, but that didn't get me into "Expert". What's wrong?

I fell into a great deal on a used M&P 40c when I first got my carry permit. I had been shooting a Ruger P89 and the 40's recoil bothered me. I liked everything else about the M&P so I got a 9c. After shooting the 9 for a few months I decided to sell the 40. Fortunately, I took the 40 to the range one last time and found little problem with recoil. Surprisingly, I shot better with the 40. That is still true a year later. I have no idea why but, I love the 40 that I was about to sell. I get the 9 out occasionally for cheaper practice but the 40 is still number one. I hope it doesn't wear out.

Beejabbers:

I've got a 40C, 40FS, and a 9C. The 40C used to shoot better than the Full Size, until I put XS sights on it :) .... They're just not for paper punching.... The 40C is a tad snappier, but only a little bit (I'm a 1911 guy so I can take a lot :D). (The 9C's a pussycat.)

9c - YES!

Good thread, fun to read! I have a .40 FS w CT lasergrip, and a 9c. The 9c is wonderful! Easy to shoot well, I highly recommend it. The .40 with laser is fun, but no one could shoot it worth a darn due to its rough trigger. I'll be installing an APEX DCAEK kit this weekend. I'm sure then I'll be very happy with both.
My dad (82 yrs old!) bought a Glock 9 last week, his first pistol, added a laser, and is challenging me to a shootout. He claims he hits exactly where he points. I can't wait to see if he means the bulls-eye, or some random spot it happens to be aiming when the hammer falls! :)

Reader850:

I'm not quite as old, but it's fun to punch holes first and draw the circles later :D....

Mom's 95, btw. She wants to come out to the range, but is too frail to get up and down the stairs. I doubt if she's touched a gun for 80 years, but her dad taught her to shoot when she was a teenager.

I think you'll find the DCAEK worth the effort.

I agree the 9c is a pussycat. Part of my great deal on the 40c was trijicon night sights. They are actually a bit harder to see at the range than the standard sights but I still shoot a bit better with it. Maybe it is a confidence thing. I will be working with the 9c more and more due to cost of ammo. I bought a 9FS also, and haven't quite decided how it fits in my rotation. An M&P 45 is coming at some point in the future. I fired one at the range and was surprised how good it felt. I have to figure out some magazine feed problems with the 40c before I invest more money in the M&P line.
