Anyone (recently) send their gun in to Smith reblue?

Was thinking of buying a decent shooter (27-2) and sending it to S&W to get re-blued ($275 high gloss). Figured I would have a nice gun, that I can shoot on occasion, for less than buying one in the same condition on the market. Not worried about collectability or an investment. Willing to bet when my kid's get it, it will be worth more than I paid.

Did a search and came up with some older posts where the results were varied. Anyone more recently have a gun blued? Happy with the results? Thanks in advance.

I'd be curious myself. Wondering how the "new process" blue they use now compares to older methods when they re-blue. For the money, it might be better to use someone like Fords? For what its worth, I haven't been too impressed with the factory polish & blue on new guns, compared to say what is on a 29-2, or earlier.

S&W can be hit and miss. I suppose that it depends on who is the refinisher that gets your gun. I have had some beautiful work and some that were not so much.

I had a 15-6 beater re-blued at Glenrock Blue in Glenrock, Wyoming. A little spendy, but an excellent job. They preserved all the markings and the result is outstanding.

I've seen a few posts of people having the "new blue" process being done on their revolver and they looked decent, at least in the pictures. But from what I've read about the problems people have had here with their new blue guns having finish durability problems and sensitivity to some gun cleaning products I think I would look into someone like Ford's for a blue refinish. Now if you want to refinish in bright nickel, I wouldn't hesitate to send to S&W. They charge the same for bright nickel as blue refinishing.

I'm late to the dance, but here goes. I've had two revolvers re-blued by S & W within the last 12-15 months, a Model 58 and a Model 10-5. Each time I was very satisfied with the results. Additionally, the factory checked over and replaced any worn parts and included the old parts when returning the firearm.

The reps at the factory alluded to the fact that the bluing process was somewhat different now due in no small part to regulations that dictated what chemicals could/could not be used. I looked at the bluing on these two revolvers and compared them to two Model 27 revolvers that I've had since right after Lincoln was shot. I can see very little difference in the finish.

Did you have your guns refinished in the standard blue that S&W offers or did you choose the high polish blue?

Both were finished in the high polish.

Seems that I recall a recent thread where Ford's was discussed and it seems that, as of late, the quality of their work is also "hit or miss".

I've sent three back to the factory for re-bluing during the past two years and can say nothing but good things about the quality and etc.
They also go through the entire lock works and repair or replace anything needed. I'm getting ready to send my 586-1 back in the next few months.

This thread is great news for me! I have a 2-inch Model 10 that is loosey-goosey and has some finish issues. I really like the examples of their satin blue that I have seen and I think it would look great on my M10 - plus be a little less expensive ...

S&W did a great job for me!

This is now two years ago, but I sent them my father's old model 41 for reblueing. It was a mess: deep scratches and deep gouges, stocks that gave me splinters when I first got a hold of it! The gun was in such bad shape that S&W cautioned me that they might not be able to get out all of the cosmetic flaws whatever they did. (The gun was in good mechanical shape, thank goodness!)

It took almost a year to get it back but S&W did a fantastic job. But for the fact that their current process provides a blacker version of blue, the gun looks like it did when my father purchased it in 1971. My only regret is that the current blueing process does not produce the high gloss blue of the old days. (I imagine that that is due to current environmental concerns.)

FWIW, Vito (whose last name I forget) was the gunsmith who did the work on my gun just before he retired. I called him to thank him after I got the gun back.

I bought this K-Comp the minute I saw it on the shelf. I knew it had the mottling along the rubber grip, and it was rusty along the frame underneath. In addition, the whole finish seemed to be fading (for lack of a better word.)



I sent it back to Smith and this is the result:
