Apex Tactical Specialties Informational Release

May 1, 2012

Dear Gary,
On April 13th, Smith & Wesson released their new M&P Shield. Since its release we've been inundated with requests for information about what Apex products will be available for the Shield. We've kept you all waiting for the last couple of weeks, so let's jump in to the Shield's similarities and differences in relation to the full size M&P.

What we know

When our Shield arrived here at Apex, it had a gritty pre-travel, hard break and relatively long over travel, yet a distinct reset. Upon detailed disassembly and inspection, we noticed the following parts interchangeable between the Shield and the full size M&P.

Sear
Sear Spring
Sear Plunger
Striker Block
Striker Block Spring
Striker Block Washer
Trigger Return Spring
Striker Assembly
Extractor Pin

That being said, our present M&P products were tested in the M&P Shield for function. We put a teaser on our Facebook page on April 25th, that we were testing our new M&P Shield Carry Kit (SCK). Claire, Jon and Scott took the M&P Shield to the Hogue Action Pistol range to fire the first 1000 rounds through the new M&P Shield in order to test our products for the release of the Shield Carry Kit and we will continue to shoot it more in coming weeks. The products we had installed in the Shield for that test were as follows:

Apex Hard Sear
Apex Ultimate Striker Block Kit(USB Kit)
Apex Duty/Carry Sear and Trigger Return Spring (DC Spring Kit)

Through 1000 rounds of Blazer Brass ammunition, the Shield performed admirably, feeding each round effortlessly with zero stoppages of any kind. The Shield was shot off hand with 2 hands, by left and right handed shooters as well as strong and weak hand only.

In the R&D lab, we tested the Shield with our Duty/Carry kit installed and it produced the same results as with the standard M&P series guns. The DCAEK took the trigger pull down from 5.75 lbs. with more than .110" over travel to 5 lbs. with .060" over travel, with a noticeably smoother uptake and crisper break.

The Apex Hard Sear and USB Kit were tested in conjunction with the factory springs in the Shield and we found the results to be the same as with other M&P models we've tested. The trigger pull was brought down to 4.25 lbs. with a smooth uptake and crisp break.

We do not recommend installing the Apex Competition Spring kit or Comp AEK into the M&P Shield as it is a product we feel is best kept with a trigger pull above the 4 lb. mark.

Apex Products that DO NOT work in the Shield

The Apex Forward Set Trigger and AEK triggers do not work in the M&P Shield. The factory trigger in the Shield is narrower than the M&P triggers. We are presently working on a solid body polymer trigger to replace the factory trigger.

The Apex Failure Resistant Extractor does not function in the Shield. The Shield Extractor is much narrower than the M&P Extractor. We are uncertain at this time if the necessity will exist for a Shield model of the FRE, but we will certainly look into it as time goes on.

The Trigger Pivot Pin in our M&P Shield measures .130 in diameter, which is significantly smaller than the full size M&P. The slave pins we currently offer in our Kits, will not work in the Shield. We are working to produce a slave pin specifically for the M&P Shield which will be included in any kit that requires the trigger to be installed into the frame.

Other Notable differences
The frame rails on the Shield's locking block are certainly stouter than the M&P's. The Sear Housing Block has an additional piece of frame rail on its left side right behind the ejector, which is never a bad thing, the more frame rail surface you have, the better the lockup and overall durability. The frame also has a steel support at the front, just forward of the locking block, which we surmise adds rigidity to the frame to enhance durability.

Final Thought

The M&P Shield is a great little carry gun. Its magazine capacities of 7 and 8 rounds coupled with its slim line body and reliability make is a great carry piece.

I installed the hard sear this weekend and now the trigger is similar to my Glock with a 3.5# connector. This is just what I wanted. Glock has really missed the boat in the single stack 9mm arena.

After I read the press release I ordered the kit for my Shield. Can't wait until it gets here!!!

hdbeast, thanks for posting this very useful information. The folks at Apex Tactical have done a great job making a very good firearm even better. It's nice to see their products will enhance my M&P Shield 40... when it finally arrives

Apex parts are first rate, and work really well. I have the USB and Hard Sear installed on three M&Ps...

This resulted in my having three extra S&W striker blocks. So I experimented today, putting one of the striker blocks in the end of the drill and turning it against a fine grit block and then 400 grit paper and then polish paste until... I created my own tapered/smoothed striker block, which is dimensionally similar to the Apex USB but not quite so precisely made. I installed it in my new M&P9 Shield while replacing the stock rear sight with a Warren Tactical sight -- I have these on my other M&Ps and think they work very well -- particularly for old eyes.

My striker block works fine, taking a little resistance off the trigger bar (I am holding off on installing the Apex Hard Sear, or making my own from one of the spares I have, because I think I prefer the Shield to have a trigger pull that is fairly strong - albeit smooth).

The Shield is a great gun so far, and while not a target pistol, per se, is pretty accurate. After I shoot a few hundred more rounds, including my preferred self-defense round, this will probably become my travel/walking/fishing/bike riding companion. There still is a place for the Mdl 642 in the pocket of my khakis or shorts...

Tempting! But I plan on leaving this one stock. (We'll see how long that lasts.....)

Glock has missed a lot lately it seems.

But they're still hanging on tight to that GAP.

I have a G23, a G27, a G22, and a G17 all of which I like and I want to pick up a FDE 3rd gen G19 despite the issues with the recent glocks. I'm not a glock fanboy by any means, I acknowledge they have pretty good stuff and I like some of the models obviously and thats where it ends. I like M&P's and XD's just as well and IMO they're both better guns both in reliability and ergonomics than the glocks. I've had many of both and neither have let me down over thousands and thousands of rounds whereas some of my glocks have malfunctioned and I will never trust as a carry gun. My G23 has been perfectly reliable since I bought it used in like new unfired condition therefor it is one of my carry guns as well as my G27 which has been perfectly reliable since I bought it in used condition. I wish I could say that same about my G17 and G22 but I still like them so I will keep them.

I bought a shield and am very impressed with it. I'll buy a glock too if they do something similar but I don't see myself ever parting with my shield. I hope glock changes some ways and makes a comparable pistol to the shield. Either way I will still enjoy the glocks I have and still have a non biased opinion so I can enjoy the other polymer designs as well.

I wrote Gaston Glock a letter several years ago and told him that he was missing the boat by not offering a single stack pistol in the 26, 27 etc. I told him that the grip was too big for many in the double stack configuration and that the woman and guys with smaller hands would be all over a thinner grip. It was all to no avail!

Me too! I have 3 Glocks a 19,33, & 36. I like them and have no probs with any of them. I have been waiting for a pocket 9 from Glock since others have come out, but as we know, to no avail. I will be looking into the Apex parts, as they seem to be well liked. For now I'm grabing up cash to get my Shield out of lay away.

Is their any problem running just the sear, plunger, and spring on the shield? Any reason why it wouldn't be reliable?

I just want the trigger to be slightly crisper and a little lighter.
