I just finished the installation of the Apex spring kit into one of my SD9VE's. I am a happy camper. It took the trigger pull from around 8 lbs down to around 6 lbs and is definitely much smoother now. Unfortunately I will be waiting until it warms up some here in snowy SW Michigan before I get out to the range to see how much better I can shoot it now.

Can't wait to try mine out too, springs and trigger. Feels great dry firing. Take up and reset still very long but manageable. Hard to find time to hit the range being a prime family time of the year!!! You must have indoor ranges on your side of the state.

I do have indoor ranges to choose from, but they are all about an hour away. I live in the country and belong to my local Conservation Club which is just 10 minutes from my driveway. I'm also too darned cheap to spend $15-$20 for 1/2 hour at an indoor range.

I am with you on range fees! Love the $4 state park option in fair weather.

Happy new year!

Perhaps not a state park. There are several DNR operated shooting ranges at local rec areas.

Well, I got the slide portion of the install done with no problem, but there was no way that danged trigger pin was going to come out. The Apex video made it look like it popped right out, but that wasn't the case for me. So, unless I was doing something obviously wrong it'll go to my local gunsmith for the trigger spring install. :-(

I had an issue getting the trigger pin out too. But, since the disassembly didn't matter so much as to which direction the trigger pin came out, I ran it out the opposite direction from the instructions. And it came out easily. Assembly was a piece of cake going the proper direction.

Ok, thanks for the info. Will give it another try. BTW, mine is a straight SD9, but I can't imagine there's any difference.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that you'll have a much easier time by driving the pin out the wrong way. It took me just a half hour from start to finish. I've actually ordered another kit for another of my SD9VE's that hopefully will be here by the weekend. My guess is the 2nd time around will go quicker now that I have one installation under my belt. I also understand that there really isn't any major differences between the SD9 and the VE series.

I saw somebody else's video where they actually had to use a punch to get it started, and that's what I did. The biggest problem I had was lining up the danged slide lock lever on reassembly, but after much swearing and gnashing of teeth I finally got it together. :-)

The slide lock is my nemesis. I had to step away and take 10 before I was successful.

I only struggled with the slide lock for a minute or so. I used the tip of a small punch to help guide the lever into place, and it slipped right in so well that I almost thought that I had to have missed something 🤪

I just ordered the apex spring kit for my SD40, but I didnt order the trigger. Is the trigger necessary or is the spring kit alone the answer to make the much needed improvement?

No and yes, in that order. There's only so much you can improve an SD, and the inexpensive spring kit was all I was going to spend on it. I will say that it did improve the trigger pull greatly.

You don't have to get the trigger to improve the weight and feel. The trigger is just the final icing on the cake. The spring kit does the most good for the money. Though, the trigger is more to my liking than the middle hinge thing S&W has going on with theirs.

I did not replace the stock trigger. I actually like the stock trigger. I am more than pleased with the reduction in pull weight and smoother action with just the spring kit.
