Have you been reading some of the "stuck in snow" and "stuck at the airport" hard luck tales? I'm sorry, but many of them are tales of rank stupidity. For example, the the family that set off from MD to travel into Canada for Xmas. Really? When all the news media were screaming about how travel of all kinds was going to get hosed. Do people not understand that the weather can kick your butt? Is the concept that they are not in control that unacceptable that they ignore weather warnings? I get that we all have Xmas plans, but a "plan" needs to include all the factors. Mother Nature trying to kill strikes me as a big one.

There was couple in Las Vegas who decided to take the kids on a surprise trip to Orlando on the 23rd. Really? What did they think was going to happen? In this day and age if you don't understand that weather can hose up air travel all over the country regardless of the sun shine in your town then you're asleep at the wheel.

At my level of situational awareness, I'm getting dizzy trying to think down to the level of these people. Do so many operate on the "it can't happen to me" principle theses days. If so, send the asteroid.

Two days befor Christmas.
Ok, lets just think about this for a second.............. !!

I think that is one reason that back in my school days they

handed out A's, B, C, D and ................ "F" !!

I gave up on our school system, in 2001, after seeing what was happening
to the students and kids.

From the web:

"At least 57 people have died due to the storm, according to NBC's latest tally. The cause of deaths for 27 of the 35 deaths in Erie County have been confirmed, with 14 people in the county dying of exposure. Three people were found in their vehicles; Four had no heat; Three people died from "shoveling/blowing cardiac events," and three died after EMS services were delayed.

The other 30 deaths have occurred across 11 states, including Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, according to NBC News."

I don't know how much of a factor IQ played but lots of families are mourning loved ones and still trying to dig out.

Question #1-Yes.

Question #2-Yes.

Having survived the Blizzard of 77. I believe people then had better situational awareness and when advised to stay home (Jimmy Griffin) they did. Folks today have cellphone's and believe help is only a emergency call away because they are clueless and self absorbed, they do not give a rats-butt about putting emergency personnel in harms way to save them from their own stupidity.

The old Yugoslavian proverb 'Tell the truth and run' applies today.

Unfortunately. I mean, it's always tragic if life is lost, especially in natural disasters. But, if you travel by car, is there no way you can reschedule or take a different route? If you travel by air, is there no way you can reschedule the flight? We all knew what was coming.

I think we, as a society, grew so complacent and ignorant of most things that we don't even consider the possibilities of what could happen.

We are so spoiled, we walk from the warm house into the warm car (many have seat- and steering wheel warmers, some even have armrest warmers!!!), travel on the road while the heater is blowing warm air and then we walk from the warm car to another warm house. Many don't even think about what could happen on the road and therefore don't even prepare for anything. It's sad really, the way we have been taking both as society as well as individuals should be reevaluated.

Belief in Four Wheel Drive

Too many have a FALSE Belief in a Four Wheel Drive go anywhere ability.

Summary from comments by an Oil Field Drilling Crew Leader and a Wise Old Farmer:
Go IN with TWO WHEEL DRIVE - Use FOUR WHEEL DRIVE to get OUT.

Four wheel drive just lets you get stuck DEEPER IN THE ****.

Right on! I have said for years a 4WD is hard to stick but when you get it stuck its much harder to get it out.-:D

FWIW I first started driving a 4WD in 1961 and I bought my first 4WD in 1973 and have had at least one every year since. I always carry a tow chain and a shovel and most times it is so I can help someone else's 4 wheeler get out!:)

And it is worthless on ice, especially black ice.

I've had 4 wheel drive or good all-wheel drive vehicles for the past 25 years and have never been stuck or stranded. When LE/DOT states No Travel advised, I don't. Exception being in town once in awhile.
I do feel Southwest airlines made some bad decisions early on during this past storm that has resulted in the huge mess still going on.

Yes. Their ability to think for themselves, rather than follow the crowd plus their addiction to their world of phones and selfies has turned their minds into mush. They're starved for attention - something their parents avoided.
