I was looking through pic threads and noticed my markings are different than other M28 HP's. Notice that the dot on the right of the logo is missing. Anyone seen this before?

Original 5 screw model was marked PATROLMAN and
later changed to HIGHWAY PATROLMAN.

mamartin043's gun has the word "highway"

I have a early, first year HP and mine also has "highway" stamped. I've never seen one w/o. Please post picture if you have one.

Edited to note: I just read in the the book that "the original test production was marked [Patrolman]". Boy I'd love to own that first one!

Doc - have you ever seen or heard of that gun?

I've never seen it before - apparently, a malfunction during the stamping process of that barrel

Roll marking a barrel sometimes left a period or dot out of the marking, not too unusual.

There were some "sample" HP revolvers that were sent to various agencies for evaluation and I don't know how they were marked, but production guns from April of 1954 and later were roll marked Highway Patrolman.

Bill - the book says that the 1954 HP's consisted of 8400 guns.
Do you have an approximate serial number range on these '54 guns?
TIA

The roll marking process exerts a lot of pressure on a small detail like the dot we're talking about. Other than the dot being missing, the roll stamp was producing an acceptable marking, S&W production workers and inspectors probably waited until the roll die became worn to replace it. Thus it's probably impossible to know how many guns received the roll mark minus one dot, just another interesting little production variation.

It's just a vagary of the dies and stamping. The missing dot should be there. It happens sometimes. I have a late 60s Bodyguard Airweight that came out AIPWEIGHT. There is no leg at all for the R letter.

Actually what you have is commonly referred to as a 3 dot as opposed to the older 4 dot models-it was an engineering change.

I have an pre 28 that is also missing the dot S1343XX.
