That's my CS-1 on AA and I hope one of you guys win it. These CS-1s are some of the nicest 686s ever produced. I was a police officer in Chicago and bought this as a backup duty revolver. It was lovingly cared for and I packed it for about a month in a suede lined Bianchi holster, then switched to a Beretta 92. Whoever wins it is going to get a great revolver.

toroflow,
From what I understood when I bought the gun a S&W rep told me that as you stated the finish is bead blasted. But he told me there were some internal differences, what they were escapes me as I bought this gun over 20 years ago. From what I remember I believe some parts were beefed up and they came with a factory action job. The double action is incredably smooth and the cylinder indexes well before the hammer drops. Shooting this double action you can duplicate single action accuracy. Also they came with round butts and the front sight has a pinned black blade.

Peyton,
You're right I should have listed it here, not only would it saved me the auction fees but assuredly someone who would really appreciate it would end up with it.

The pictures are good and clear. Does the hogue grip screw mess up the serial number on the bottom of the grip? Or does it press the metal flat against the grip??

Peyton,
The Hogue recepter doesn't hurt the serial number as it is flat and even along the grip frame. Plus it is easily removable should you want to go back to wood or some other grip. These Hogues feel just right on this revolver, but here is how it looks with a pair of S&W Combat Goncalo Alves wood grips.

The CS-1 was my grail gun for years. FINALLY got a 3" and have to say it is now my favorite centerfire revolver, beating out my beloved 3" 66-2 Ashland. The trigger is fantastic and you'd better be running at 100 yards as it's as accurate as heck when I'm having a good day. Have a set of Ahrends on order to fancy it up and a TT Gunleather OWB holster for hiking/camping. I love the look of the S&W combats but they just don't fit my hand.

Not my pic. Will post my own when the grips come in.

What is the difference between these and a 4" 686? I see on the CS1 it looks like a bead blasted finish, but other than that, what? Thanks.

At the time the CS-1 revolvers were produced, the standard M686 4" guns were square butt gripframes. All the CS-1 guns were RB regardless of the barrel length (3", 4" and a handful of 6" for the CS Target Team).
Also, these had the infamous "floating hand", bead blasted finish, and the front sight was a pinned in 1/10" wide sight (standard production was, and still is, wider at 1/8"). The later CS-3 guns have 1/8" wide front sight blades along with other engineering changes.
These were also shipped with Pachmeyer grips with a "window" in the butt so you could see the serial number, a new feature from Pachmeyer at the time, they developed this version for the CS contract.

Sportsterguy,
That is one beautiful revolver, 3" barrels are my favorite. Had I known these CS-1s would become collectable I would have bought a 3" along with my 4", actually several.

Thank you sir. I traded a 3" 29 for it. Love .357's and .41 mags and didn't shoot the 29 as my .41's will do about anything a .44 mag will do with the right bullet and load with less recoil. It's one sweet shooting revolver. Trigger is the best DA I've ever shot from a production revolver.

It's a keeper and I have now sworn I will never let another S&W go away!

I have one more to add to my collection and I'm calling it quits. A model 58 to replace the one I sold in 85 for a couple hundred dollars. Should have the pocket change for one this summer.

Thanks and take care,

Roger
