Arlington in the snow

I was lucky enough to visit a few years ago and got to see the "behind the scenes" and talk to some of the soldiers.

The preparation and training to perform their duty is grueling and thorough. True professionals.

I grew up in the area, and remember being taken there by my folks as a little guy. We visited the Iwo Jima memorial as well, while it was under construction. It is huge, but does not look like it because of its mass. The M-1 carbines were laying on the ground, and I remember walking along next to them-maybe 75 feet long! And there is a door for maintenance in one Marine's boot heel. Whenever I see it I remember that occasion.

When I was in boot camp, The selection committee came and asked for volunteers for that duty so I went for an interview. I was disappointed that I wasn't chosen. On the other hand, If I had been, I wouldn't have had the experiences that I did. I believe they take an oath of life long sobriety. If broken, they have to turn in the badge given to them...a small wreath medallion if memory serves.

More Info. The lady that took the photo was in Washington with a group of youths to participate in the March For Life. I sent her a link to this post and this is her reply to me:

Hey Joe,
Thank you so much for sharing that with me. I shared your email with all the people on our bus, consisting mostly of high school aged young adults. We were all there paying our respects to those who gave their all for freedom and the dignity of human life. I explained to them that even though we were the ones honored to be able to visit such a beautiful memorial, that our presence meant more than any of us could imagine. This is how God works, since he is so much bigger than ourselves, it is in giving that we receive. Even though I know your beliefs may be different than mine, God used you in such a loving way, that your actions have touched numerous hearts and confirmed who God is and how he touches so many lives with something so small as this. God bless you Joe and thanks again!

Mary
