Actually the uniforms were the idea of Spiro Agnew, and the helmets were the same as worn by German police. Nixon hated the uniforms, and they quietly faded away.

The caps of the White house police back then reminded me of some Banana republic with that upswept front.
When I went into the Army a female captain had supposedly completed or attended the Q- course and was not awarded the beret it was a controversy for about a week and half, she claimed discrimination.
I am not sure why the candy stripers were allowed to wear the beret, but that is one of the reasons for the SF tab.
