Ashland 60 Value

Worth?

By golly, now there's an interesting point to ponder.

I watched one go back in March for $1,750, as you describe aanib.

Was it "worth" that? Only that winning bidder can say, "Yes."

If I were in the market -- today -- I'd probably want to get in below $1,200, but I don't know if that's possible any more.

Serial numbers I've logged are AIVxxxx, ALUxxxx (the majority), and ANBxxxx (a few).

The correct box should have the label with the PC 102305, and a SPEC ORD of 51xx (at least according to all the ones I've seen).

Good luck. Neat, neat little pea shooter.

Well, The deal happened and I now own the Ashland Shooter's Supply 60-1. As a trade I gave up a beautiful 60-9, 2 1/8" magnum frame that my wife keeps in the coffee table drawer in the den. The adjustable sight 38 will now reside in the drawer for her protection. She does like J frames. Interestingly, the box for this special run is from the Lear Siegler time frame of S&W's history.

BTW, the new to us revolver is loaded with the same Remington "special police load" lead hollow points as the 60-9. Call me old school.

I believe the reference to the Burgundy case is for the mod 60 Lady Smith! My Ashland gun is in a numbered fold-over lid cardboard box used during that time period.

Right you are!! I should have read the first page too... I edited my original post and scratched that comment. Thanks JC!

... I now own the Ashland Shooter's Supply 60-1. As a trade I gave up a beautiful 60-9....

Congrats.

You made a great deal.

I had to look in my records. I paid $45 more for my 2000 60-9 Lady Smith than for my Ashland 60-1.

As regards spin132's letter, I've seen variety in Dr. Jinks' letters/reports of how many Ashland Model 60s there were. Reported production numbers I've seen in letters are 600, 660, 666, and 1,000, which is what the letter on mine says.

In discussions with several notable authorities on Chiefs Special Target models, the consensus seems to believe the 660 number simply because it's the most frequently cited. The others -- like spin's and mine -- are infrequently reported outliers.

Out of 48 of the Ashland models in my database only a handful with letters do not say 660.

That smart scientist we grew up learning about said, "All things that can be counted don't count, and all things that count can't be counted." Albert Einstein.

What counts here is you having that Chiefs Special Target model with a hammer-mounted firing pin. Obligatory photo of mine attached.

Congrats, again.

Love the Einstein quote. Definitely applies to S&W. I have my letter request form in front of me. I want to have the letter for posterity.

Karen complained about the heavy DA trigger but she'll probably get over it. I'm still going to install a Wolff reduced power rebound spring to accommodate her, though it's really no different than her other J frames. ;)

I suppose I should fish through the thread on corrections to the SCSW, 4th to find the answer but I'm feeling lazy this morning. Page 262 shows product code 102305 as a 3" for ***, and also 2". Which is it, or is it both? This one is a 2" like the ones shown.

Ashland Shooters Supply got ***ed by our auto correct.

I have never seen a 3"! I have talked to one of Joe Stemp's(owner of Ashland Shooters supply) employees many years after the place closed and I was told there were only 2" guns received. I have a small database for these guns and ALL are 2" guns.

I believe the SCSW, 4th Ed., took creative license with the text common in Dr. Jinks' letters regarding a 3" Model 60-1.

Thanks to jcelect's teachings several years ago, I learned there was, indeed, a 3" Model 60-1, but the parts were manufactured in 1971 in the R57xxx s/n range. I know of one supposed "experimental" model assembled and shipped to John Jovino Company on June 12 that year, but Dr. Jinks said rather than scrap the 1971 parts S&W assembled and shipped 171 of these in 1978. They were not Target models, and they had a square butt.

It was odd for S&W to reuse the Model 60-1 identifier in 1985 for the Ashland Target models because they were so different than the original 60-1.

As we all know, with S&W "exception is the rule."

Shown is my June 1978-shipped Model 60-1.

In addition to Chiefs Specials I hoard dictionaries. A friend gave this 1971 2,664-page unabridged dictionary to me. Oddly, no one has ever given a Chiefs Special to me.

I have a consecutive pair, sn ALU0795 and ALU0796. My plan was to put them in my custom fitted Model 60 leather case made for S&W employee "Trigger" McGowan. I didn't, because ALU0796 has never been taken out of the wrapping paper.

Back in the mid-'80's I was a 'back pocket FFL holder' and ordered lots of stuff from Ashland via Shotgun News. Sold MANY of the M60 Targets to LE co-workers, and IIRC they were priced very attractively.
Ashland was great to deal with - very prompt and service oriented.
Sure wish I'd gotten one for ME.

I have three of these. Always interests me when I see the letters formerly from S&W. I have two letters on on 60-1. ALU prefix.SCSW says 600 + manufactured. S&W Historian said there were 1000 of them shipped. Same day as the letter shown. Interesting M 60 though. They live in the safe.

i will let you know what the letter shows on this one, when it gets here.

If they've already been shot why make them safe queens.

I have an Ashland 60-1 that I have shot since it came to me in 2014 as having been fired and box that is a little rough around the edges but better than no box..A 3" 60-4 is arriving today at my FFL
Stainless is easy to clean after firing so enjoy what you own.The 60-4 will go to the range next week after thorough inspection and cleaning.

"StakeOut", you are so right. I collected model 60s for a long time because
it was my off duty carry back in the early 80s. Sentimental stuff, ya know?
I have 2 & 3 inch Jovino's also. The 2" is sort of rough but the 3" is like new. The 2" has what appear to be scratches on the cylinder. Probably from a holster snap? I've had several suggestions on how to clean it up but have been cautious about doing it and not making it worse. Probably as suggested I should shoot it! I really like all of the older 60s though. My off duty had a really good action job. It was so smooth unlike most 60s. I mistakenly sold that one just before I started collecting them. Thanks for the advise.p
