Here's my 686. Its a 1983. This was the first time I ever shot it. 50 rounds at 100 ft.

Next time I'll use a man size target so I can see how close my misses are.

SCSW 4th edition page 489 states (approximate manufactured dates) Early J frame serial range...1957 serial numbers are 117770 to 125000...that is why I thought it probably would be 1956...

Oh well...1956? 1957?...I guess what differencxe does 1 year make? Maybe the SCSW is off???

I've come to find nothing in print shouldn't be put in concrete. One of my Chiefs -- a 3" square butt -- is in the serial range of others that shipped in January 1955, but it didn't ship till June '56.

Without asking Roy everything becomes a best guess and within a year ain't bad for sixty-odd years ago.

Not bad for 100'... and you managed to miss the spotting scope the target was hanging from.

Found a new to me Mod 37 Airweight in nickel with original box, paper and cleaning rod. Serial number J830xxx. I sure would appreciate it if someone could help with the deliver date.

I've seen a J71xxxx bought new in 1979 and a J91xxxx bought new in 1981 so I would guess yours was delivered about 1980 give or take - among the last with the pinned barrel.
