A friend down visiting the Carolinas just sent me this picture of some ocean critter.
Neither one of us knows what it is.

Can anybody identify this thing?

(For the record, I already told him to kill it with fire. :D)

I have no idea. I wouldn't wait to kill it with fire, I'd open up on it with whatever I had handy. Even resistant critters give in to heavy magnum pistol fire. It looks kind of soft skinned, so a few boxes of 44s should seriously reduce its mobility. Maybe with luck, separate its different parts from the main body. My advice, keep shooting until you're out of ammo. Then send out for more.

What is a shark ray?

are you sure it's all one critter & not two... one feeding off the other? The large front part looks like some type of skate or ray.. the back half?

I would say that it is a Northern Sea Robin, which is a bottom-dweller along the NC coast and north to New England. This one looks to have been out of the water for a while and has deteriorated dramatically. They supposedly are edible, but not at my house.
