Dad has been gone since 2013, but I still have a little bit from him that I broke out tonight for my B-Day.

Back in the '70s when we would go down to the Rio Grande Valley to see the grandparents every holiday, Dad and a few of the other males would make the short trip across the border to restock their liquor cabinets. When he passed I took over his cabinet, which was a locked wooden cabinet built by his father who was a carpenter. It was stored in the garage and so everything in it has been through around 45 years of seasonal temperature changes.

Tonight's libation is a bottle of Johnny Walker Black label. Including the 12 years of cask time it should be between 55 and 60 years old now. I pull it out every year or two and pour myself some. Tonight there is 1.5 fingers in a rocks glass that I got as a B-Day gift from my best friend Mark, who is also no longer with us.

So, here's to you Dad, and you Mark. I miss you both.

Happy birthday, John! I think you commemorate your father's passing well.

We never do get over losing our parents, do we? My dad passed in 1995, and my mom in 2011. Always feels like, 'cause it's true, that there's something missing from life. If we're blessed, children, and — if very blessed — grandchildren help fill that loss.

(And I for one would love to see the wooden cabinet built by your grandfather..:))

Tuesday was the 6th anniversary of my dad's passing, and yesterday would have been his 93rd birthday. He kept a bottle of Crown Royal at home, really and truly, for medicinal purposes. So Tuesday I had a jigger of regular Crown Royal for him, and yesterday I opened up a bottle of peach Crown Royal and had a jigger of that for his birthday.

Happy birthday and I hope you can find your birthday present at the local gun shop.

Gotta say it, I just love whiskey threads!:D

P.S. Getting hard to find good whiskey out here conveniently. Lee's seems to carry just 'plain vanilla' and my local Smith's supermarket carries more and more bottom drawer generic whiskeys and other spirits. Guess where? On the bottom shelves...

Me too.
My wife thinks I have an obsession with old boxes. I tell her it's because I'll probably end up in one.

I'm am not the OP, but I like old boxes too. I bought this one in the Spring of 1965 at Ford Tool and Carbide in Birmingham, AL. I guess the kids will fight over it.

Have a blessed day,

Leon
