Bought a 22 rifle at my local LGS/range 3 weeks ago here in NJ, they said "We'll text you when your NICS comes through." About 4 days. I was in no rush of course.

I had to wait three days....

...simply because the agency couldn't handle the volume, and this was a few years ago. It's essentially amounting to a 3 day waiting period just because they put a 'hold' on it when you apply for it.

But you can still buy with a driver's license right? I did when I lived in the Panhandle in the 80's. DL, paperwork, fork over money and walk out with the gun.

Of course, but now you have to wait for the NICs to go through which can take anywhere from a few seconds to a day or two.

In the 80s, there was no background check. But yes, you can purchase a firearm with just a DL, fill out the 4473, fork over the money, and walk out with the gun once you've cleared the background check. Before Covid, the background check was pretty quick, like 5 minutes or so.
