Background Check Rant

...

Recently my son made a business trip to a very gun friendly state. (I won't say which one because I don't want to offend anyone.) After his meeting he went to a bar with some of his coworkers and naturally the discussion went to guns. When he heard how easy it was to buy an "assault rifle" or a pistol with a 30 round mag he said maybe he should move down there. They said no way we don't want you yankees down here, yada, yada, yada.

So, say what you will. The grass may look greener but it never usually is...

But they will gladly take any jobs and money you send there!

Takes me all of 10 minutes because I am shooting the bull with the FFL holder while we fill out the 4473. No call here with CWP. He just puts its number on the form.

We don't care if your a Yankee or know how to whistle Dixie if you just go with the flow, try to fit in and don't try to "improve" our life style or laws you will be fine. Do not tell people your from California, we don't want care about how you do it back where ever. Remember that what your neighbor is doing on his property is his business. If it bothers you that he has 2 rusty cars, BBQ meat several times a week and you don't like it, that is your problem. If his rooster crows at 5:30am and it wakes you up make a cup of coffee, and welcome the day. You must not have been that tired if a chicken can keep you awake. Cattle have a tenancy to smell, like cattle, if it bothers you don't be a moron and move in by someone who has them. DUH

You can drive around with a car full of loaded guns from a 2" pistol to a 32" 50BMG, in about any configuration without any kind of permit what so ever, the size of your magazines is your business. Cop sees a gun in your car he won't even blink. He couldn't even inspect it without a warrant anyway. Your car, your castle, just like your home, same thing goes for your tent while camping. The gun stores in town have ARs on the shelf right now. You have the money, state ID and pass the check or have a CWP, you can walk right out the door with one or 2 or 6, in less than 30 minutes. Want a silencer or a full auto? Thats between you and the feds, the state is fine with it.

Yes, it is going to get really cold and it is gonna snow. It helps keep the rats, cockroaches, whiners and snivelers out. If you can't drive on snow covered, icy roads either stay home or leave.
If someone having snow on their car irritates you, your going to spend all winter being irritated. But, the guy with snow on his pickup will stop and ask you if you need help when you run off in the ditch or break down. Give you a ride or even pull you out.The semis are going to have chunks of ice the size of small boulders dropping off from the build behind their wheels anyway. The smart thing to do is stay back and be ready. Might have to dodge a deer or an elk anyway and those are far more apt to be a problem than snow off someones roof.

When I hear about laws on this, I always imagine some poor truck driver getting up on the icy roof of his trailer to clear the snow at 20 below after a night in the rest area 50 miles from any town. LOL. Not happening folks.

The antis are continually coming up with new ways to make us jump through more hoops to buy and own firearms.

They know they'll never be able to simply ban all guns in one fell swoop so what they do is chip away, chip away until one day we find our right to bear arms is effectively gone. I'm kind of hoping I'll be in the ground before it gets that far.

The longest I've had to wait so far in the past few years for a background check here in Florida is an hour - but we still have a 3-day waiting period unless you have a CC permit.

So the wife and I both took the class and applied for our CC permits...

The class was four hours - no big deal. There are only a select few places that will process the applications and take your fingerprints (thank you COVID-19!). We are lucky enough to have one close by that only services folks from our municipality, BUT...

New appointments open 21 days in advance and no sooner. They only have a few appointments per day and they are booked up quickly. How quickly, you ask? They fill up so quick you have to get on their website at midnight the day before the new appointments are opened up in order to get one. If you are 5 minutes late you may have to wait until the next day at midnight. Oh, and our local office gets to charge $25 more for this convenience over what the state charges...

Once you get one of these precious appointments and wait your three weeks to file your application and fingerprints, the state has 90 days to complete the process and mail you your license. In total, it's a hair under four months to get your CC permit. All of a sudden an hour for a background check and the 3-day waiting period to get your gun isn't sounding so bad!

Sorry for the rant...

What be said. No need for a permit to carry here, open or concealed, but if you have one you avoid the NICS check. Sometimes takes me longer to buy a loaf of bread than than a gun.

Ya, our legislature past permit-less concealed carry, but our governor did not sign it. He could only serve 2 terms here so now we have a different brand of governor so maybe. But, lots of people hare don't get a permit because you only need one to carry concealed upon your person in town. You can have a loaded gun in the glove compartment, under the seat, on your dash, where ever in your car with no permit. I always used to get delayed before getting the permit. Even if the ever go permit-less I will keep mine for out of state travel.

My first permit I took the paper work and photo in on Thursday and the sheriff called on Monday and said come and get it. I didn't have to take any classes or anything because to him being a veteran is good enough for him.

Sometimes it happens. I've had PICS go through in minutes, other times I have had to come back the next day. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. I've had it happen when buying a gun and renewing my LTCF.

If I ever moved I think it would be West. I'm used to snow and the smell of cow manure. Wayne County was a big milk producing area at one time. My wife's uncles were dairy farmers.

I know all about the NYC types that come here and think we're hicks because we hunt, fish, own guns, drive pick ups etc.

AFAIC they are on the wrong side of the Delaware River . Check your city ways at the toll bridges.

Amen! And, unlike the grocery store, nobody in any of my local gun shops sneers at me for not wearing a mask.

But the wind blows all the time so the snow is horizontal, and sometimes it piles up to five or six feet! The temps begin with a "-" more times than not.

It's a terrible place to live. I don't recommend it at all.

The last time I purchased a gun, I'm in Florida, the dealer called wrote down a number and hung up. He said you are on the instant approval list. Don't know how that happened but I'll take it[emoji2][emoji2][emoji2][emoji2]

Here is one thing about Montana. If you think your going to come here and make the money you did somewhere else, your most likely going to be sadly disappointment. The average Family income in the state is $57,000.

All these stories make me glad to live in Texas where all I have to do is fill out the paper, show my carry license, and walk out the door with my new (or used) gun.
But you can still buy with a driver's license right? I did when I lived in the Panhandle in the 80's. DL, paperwork, fork over money and walk out with the gun.
