Backyard shooting range in a residential neighborhood?

I agree that suppressors will help keep the noise down, I use mine mainly to help with varment control, but I'd have to say that just because you have the right to do something does not mean it's the right thing to do.

Someday I'll have a range in my backyard. Unfortunately I'll be divorced and retired by then, because when I retire, I'm moving about 15-20 miles east of here where there is still plenty of land to be bought. My wife says she will not, under any circumstances, move farther from the city than we are now, hence the divorced part. :D

Yeah I saw the coverage of the "range". I'd say that calling that a back stop would be stretching the description of a range just a bit. I don't know what was beyond the back stop but if it was more residences THAT was NOT safe.

My rant was meant to be about the social media. As I said I've seen social media used to incite people to disrupt a city council meeting. People use social media to hide behind. I prefer to stand up and be recognized.

Sorry for side tracking the thread.

Sorry 'bout that; if anything, I sidetracked your post. Much as I am not a fan of SM, it's the new Town Hall. Hiding behind that is certainly an issue; but then, I use a pseudonym here. Can't call the kettle black.

As for the backstop, it certainly ain't what I'd consider to be a range, and there are residences behind it. I'm not sure it would be adequate for a slingshot, let alone firearms.

Yeah.....

I would love to have a backyard range, but definitely not in a residential neighborhood. Legal or not, you still have to live with your neighbors.

I would have to make some really quiet ammo or use a pellet gun in addition to being sure that nothing can get away. It would be really cool to have your own range but I can sure understand people being upset about living near one. Unless it were done in such a way that they didn't know it. I've fantasized about a 'tunnel' type like they use in test labs with soundproofing but it would be a major project and I don't have any suitable space. A big cellar would be nice. A friend put together some 9mm lead 'gallery loads' on a .38 case and they were not very noisy.

On backyard plinking

"There's people in this area who think I'm some redneck, chewing, dipping my lip, Second Amendment nut," Varrieur said. "I'm not. All I want to do is come out here and safely shoot my gun. Instead, I am pushing the limit — the only way to get attention is if people get mad."

The reason: He, too, is concerned about what he called the "loose" way the law is written.

So, basically are these guys really anti-gun?

Even if the insurance were available and affordable in my hood the city fathers would have you hanging from the flag pole in front of the police station for even having a dream about shooting a gun in city limits, and never mind having a gun range in your back yard.

Our police don't even have a place to shoot here in our little burg. They have to go to the next town over, Pasadena, where the police have their own shooting facility.

Our city fathers are kinda paranoid you might say. They won't even allow a bowling alley, a movie theater or bingo (but we DO have a golf course  ) here in Deer Park. They fear the encroachment of organized crime. And they don't want to attract the "riff-raff" from LaPorte and Pasadena and South Houston. Their feeling is that if the good citizens of Deer Park want to indulge in the baser forms of entertainment then let them go out to other places where such debauchery can be found.

With proper precautions, I think you could safely shoot conventional air guns in your backyard. I'd love to be able to do that legally.

You can shoot air guns in Houston as long as the bb's/pellets don't
leave your own property. Or at least unless they have recently changed
the law. We shot the heck out of them when I was a younger pup and
never gave it a second thought. But firearms, no way..

I had a professor....

========================

Allegedly hit with a bullet, I have my doubts and have seen no evidence to verify her story, except for her story.

I had a professor who's mother was killed in her own house by a hunting bullet that came through the wall. From the trajectory it seemed that it came from a long way off.
