Bad News

Just got back from the vet. My rescue cat snooty had a lump on her jaw, vet took x-rays and found cancer. He said it was too far gone to operate. I have had a lot of pets in my life and loved them all. Snooty was found living behind a Wendy's by a rescue group. She was fully grown when they found her and lived at the shelter two years before we adopted her. We have had her six years and she has been a joy to have in our family. The vet wanted to put her down but I told him she is still eating ok and sleeping peacefully in my wife's lap. As soon as I see the first sign that she is hurting I will have her put to sleep. This old tough marine has a special place in his heart for this old ally cat and will miss her dearly. Sorry to unload on you guys but I know this is a great group.

Sorry for that news. Your cat known whats thought about of her and knows your doing right. I dread the day that Shasta gets too old. She already is at least 10 human years....

Anyway,prayers sent.
 
I feel your pain. I lost a few awesome cats in the recent years.

I rescue kittens I find dumped in the woods. I keep them together. There way happier when two from the same litter are together. Even dogs are too. The kittens play together and are fun to watch. Every so often I find kittens in the woods when I'm fishing. My first rescued kitten just passed away this fall. She was very independent as females can be. But I had one female I rescued that would sit and eat nuts with me. I do find that abandoned kittens can be traumatized. It takes time to bring them around.
 
One of our rescues was a Russian Blue named Sophie. She also developed a tumor on her jaw. Her final 5 months she dined on Fancy Feast and tuna in oil. When she stopped eating we knew it was time.
Over a 32 year span we have rescued 16 cats and dogs. We're down to 3. It doesn't get easier.

Snooty and I thank you for being there.
 
Like now I've always had multiple dogs and cats. It's heart breaking when they die. Focus on the happy times and how lucky they were to have a loving owner. That's hitting the lottery for a pet.

It hurts, no way around it. I only cry when I lose a pet. But it frees up space for you to give another suffering creature a wonderful life. I lost 2 dogs on the same day this past spring. A few weeks later this fluffy old stray dog wandered into our yard. When Baby Bear isn't playing couch potato, she's sleeping in our bed.

We are all dying. But for now we live.

Sorry for your bad news. Thank You for the life you've given her. She'll let you know when it's time.

I've been there, just feed my rescue cat Toby lunch, now I'll stop by my GF's and feed my other rescue cat Chloe her lunch. K's visiting her mom, so I have double cat duty this week, both cats are refugees from the Phx Valley.
 
My rottie female was my dog she died in my wife's arms. Part of me died with her. I never knew all my kids would show up that night like a wake for her funeral. My kids had a deep respect for her. She was a sweet heart. I'm not afraid I still have tears when I think of her.
My old cat Rambo is 17 years old now. He's slowing down. He was a wild kitten born in a corn field. Almost hit by a sickle bar. All the kittens were saved there mom too. It's sad to see them go. I hope to see them again someday.

Recently we moved to the rural area with more land for the pets to roam. The kids are gone so we take care of the animals now.

Sometimes you have to let someone else take your pet to the vet or let someone else do what has to be done----otherwise---it is just too hard on ya.

I guess for some that is the right answer. For me, I've held every one as they have breathed their last breath in this world, save one, and I will feel personal guilt for that one until the day I die myself. I'm not suggesting it is easy, just that I feel I owe this one last thing for my faithful dogs.

Also, jarhead, I have been told that dogs (don't know about cats), do very well at hiding pain and suffering, so do please be sure you keep an eye on your friend, that she not suffers but what she must.

I'm sorry man, I guess this last part is our bill due for the love that our animals give us while they are here...

Thanks for message. I posted once before on another thread that when I had my dog Pumpkin put down I didn't stay with her. I have always had such regrets about not staying with her until the end that i will stay and hold my pet until the end no matter how hard.
 
Always sad news--:( While I have always had my German Shorthairs, we had a cat for 20 years that my youngest son found dumped as a kitten up at a local mall when he was in HS--- 'BABY' never cared for me much but the day we lost him, he was sitting at the front door and seemed to be waiting for me to come home. I came in through the garage and sat down in my chair where I always sat. He took about 4 steps toward me and just laid down. I went and picked him up and sat down with him. He made a couple of little noises and settled down. Sometime that night, while still on my lap laying on a towel he went to sleep and never woke up-- I still miss that darn cat, and we tell some of his stories ever once in awhile--
