I live in the hills about 3 miles from the Wabash river, here in south Indiana. There have been eagles along the river for several miles, for a few years now. Last year we saw an eagle about a mile from our house, at the edge of a big lake. Last fall we saw another one about a mile from our house going the other direction, just sitting in a corn field about 50 yards from the highway. Today I look out the window and there sits a huge eagle in my walnut tree, in my side yard. Wife and I both watched him with the binoculars, about 40 yards away. What a fantastic bird, bright yellow beak and feet, the white on his head and tail was pure white. After a bit she flew to the front yard and on the edge of a highway, and took off, then swooped to the ground a couple of times over the open fields.
I thought that there might be some road kill on the highway, there normally is, but not this time. Mrs. Bald Eagle was after some icing covered doughnuts, that someone tossed out their windows. I think she was swooping down to the ground and picking up the pieces of doughnuts ,she was dropping.
The birds in my feeders were no where to be seen, while it was in the walnut tree. Woodpeckers and all, had vanished. I guess I'll remember this day for a long time. I suspect it was a female, huge bird maybe a 6 ft. wingspan, and probably taller than my lab. Mikey

The came back from being endangered.....

They just remove it from the endangered list in 2007. I thought it would be a lot earlier than that. It's too bad that they don't prey on another species brought back from the brink. The American Alligator.

They are now in the 'Least Concern' column of the endangered list. A species can't get more robust than that. Overall, they are very beneficial, controlling populations of rodents and maybe even snakes, but anything in or around the water is fair game. Makes life around water interesting. They seem to really like golf courses.

My mom and dad live on Lake Des Alkemands in South Louisiana. It's not uncommon to see two or three eagles per day while riding around in a boat near the marshes and swamps. While driving to their house, through sugar cane fields, my wife and I have seen many Bald Eagles, even on side of the highway eating road kill. I'm never NOT impressed when I see these beautiful birds. Truly amazing creatures!!

You couldn't get a shot at him?

I'm joking of course. I see them along the river below my house sometimes. They're amazing to watch.

Good sized population around here, with lots of state land on all sides of the rivers. My last sighting was about a month ago, as one lazily circled the firing range on a cold, sunny morning. Looked like an A10 surveilling a potential strafing run. Several people make a mission of finding and photographing them, and I see lots of great pictures.

This one looked like a war bird when it left the nest and came straight towards me.

I learned this from tv just a few nights ago: when a bald eagle loses a feather it will rid itself of the matching feather on the other side for balance.

Amazing.

Just down from our place, on the shore of the river is a large dead tree. Eagles have had a nest in the top branches for the past few years. There is an osprey nest a bit further on down the river and have witness same real spats over "whos" catch it really was.
