I recently purchased an M&P15 with the Magpul MOE. I have been looking for any suggested barrel break-in procedures but I can't find one on the M&P. I'm assuming its because of the Melanite coating in the barrel. Any suggestions or can I just go shoot?

Barrel break-in is a waste of time with almost any rifle including target guns, let alone a combat rifle with a Melonite treated barrel. Shoot it.

More barrel damage is done by improper cleaning than anything else.

M&P recently had an ad running in some of the gun magazines that mentioned that the break in period ended when the first round exited the barrel.:D

If you search on "Barrel Break in" you'll get a broad spectrum of opinions and methods, some of which are very complicated. I think the prevailing current opinion is "don't worry about it." I think the best thing to do is shoot normally and clean the bore well after you finish a session.

For no particular reason, my method for breaking in a new gun is to do it while sighting in - shoot a 5-shot group and clean the bore. Adjust sights. Repeat until you are sighted in.

Yup, the crew got it right again.

I was a gun writer for about 25-years. My feature articles usually were about a heavy target or varmint rifle with a custom barrel. I literally HAD to perform a barrel break-in on each, just to prevent the wailing and moaning letters from the pro-break-in crowd.

My personal experiments dictated that there was absolutely NO reason for barrel break-in.

From that moment forward, I never performed a break-in on any of my own personal barrels.

One added thing. I have seen snake-oil products appear and disappear in the firearms industry. Most of the new stuff is ****. Having said that, the Melonite coated bore dramatically reduces bullet gilding-metal fouling. It is the real deal.

Smith & Wesson really did us a great favor there!!!

Good Luck with your new rifle, my friend.

God Bless,

Steve Timm
