After taking my new M&P 9c to the range for the first time, I noticed some strange marks at the end of the barrel.. at the end of each "land" there is some chipping going on. I inspected this thing thoroughly when I got it and didnt notice any burrs at the end of my barrel. but I could've missed something? Anyhow, the gun performed excellent! I was able to shoot tight groups and I just love this thing more than any auto I've ever owned. At this point I feel it wont cause me any issues other than the fact it looks weird. But I want to get my barrel polished to a chrome-like finish anyway.. Has anyone seen this before?? thanks!

I've never looked at mine (until you posted this and then I had to look:D). I don't see any color difference at the end of the lands. Maybe you should send those pics to S&W and see what they say. My feeling is that if it's accurate, don't mess with a good thing. ;)

Chipping? Or, could it be lead deposits? Can't tell from the photos. Were you shooting any cast bullets?

I fired 50 rounds of Federal 115gr FMJ and 5 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense down range..

here is a better pic I got outside with my phone on macro mode, steadying myself on the truck lol

oops this is the one I wanted to Post...

Looks like the finnish is comming off not the steel chipping. Is it melonite I'd want to know if it's a problem that's going to grow. You should talk to smith and see if you need to send it back or live with it. Maybe it wasn't degreased well before finishing.

Maybe it is just the angle of the picture, but is it on the outside of the barrel also?

I'm with Gunsnwater on this one. Maybe the finish built (ridged) up a little in that area and the fired rounds removed the excess that the test fire round did not. Could be wrong.

Was something hitting against the barrel (Versacarry holster, bore sigther, etc)?

M&P 313,

Looked at my 9C and the end of the barrel doesn't have the same look as yours. Mine does show some "silver color" at the end of the lands but not anywhere as much as yours. I have about 500+ rounds through mine.

I would think you should contact S&W and see what they have to say.

Hope the photo is of some help to you.

Have you tried to clean it off already?
Yes, after shooting it for the first time I did a field strip and inspection and noticed the shiny spots and that's when I gave it a good cleaning. After cleaning I took my thumb nail and scratched at it a little and thats when the chipping caught my nail and worsened.. If you look at the last photo you can see on the bottom of the barrel where you can't see the bore wall or any lands the silver is creeping outside the bore.. As far as it just being reflection the same three spots are visible in all photos.. I'm liking the idea of contacting S&W to see what they say, hopefully they take my gun put a new barrel in it and send it back. I've just never seen anything like this before..

Thanks for all the input guys!! Ill keep ya posted on how this goes...

If you shot federal, there's a known issue with them leading up barrels. Grab some 100% copper chore boys and try cleaning it. Looks like lead fouling to me.

That last picture tells the story. The finish is chipping away. Wow.

Chiggin, I owe you a million! you got my gears turnin and I did a little research.. Then I found this...

Once I clicked the picture links what I seen was too familiar. So I got out my copper brush attachment for my cleaning kit and scrubbed like I wanted to remove the black tenifer coating from my barrel, sure enough it started to dissipate!
I used to run that Federal through my Glock with no problems I thought it was good ammo. I did pick it up at walmart, and I noticed it was the ugliest factory ammo I've ever seen, But didn't give it a second thought. Thanks again guys!! I'll sleep a little better tonight lol being lead I can now see how it chipped and got shinier when I caught it with my finger nail.. do'h! :D

Wonderful to hear the problem is solved. I had not heard of the leading problem before with Federal.

At my advanced age I still learn something new almost every day!

Glad it worked for you! I was pretty sure it was only lead fouling. My barrels do the same thing. You can still shoot the Federal, just keep that barrel nice and clean after each 100 rounds or so of Federal.

I've had the same issue with my Shield 9 using Federal. Its the only ammo I can find at Walmart so I will continue to use it. Just have to sure to clean after each use.
