Bass & Cabelas

That would be a real shame. :( As bad as our brand new Massachusetts "Mini-Cabela's" is... Bass Pro is worse.
To expand (or clarify) a little from my earlier post, the Bass Pro here in Massachusetts is okay. I'm glad it's here and I bought a fair amount of ammo there during the great post-Newtown ammo shortage. But I wouldn't buy a handgun there if my life depended on it. The prices are very high, there are no sales or discounts ever... and their prices can be beat by even the smallest, most expensive neighborhood gun shops I know. :o

The thing is that I expected a whole lot more from our new "Mini-Cabela's" based on their full-size stores in other states, most notably the ones in CT (pre-Newtown) and ME. But I did not account for the Massachusetts "moonbat" factor... i.e., how much a "free state" company like Cabela's would bow to the whims & wishes of the loony moonbat anti-gun/anti-gunowner community. Turns out that the answer is "a whole lot"!

Despite serious disappointment, I have already purchased two new handguns there (they won't sell used) plus a good amount of ammo. Why? Because they *do* run some good promotions and sales... and they *will* do price-matching on firearms and ammo, in at least some cases and with good documentation. :o I hear the price matching policy on guns & ammo may go away soon, but so far I believe it is still in place.

So while our MA "Mini-Cabela's" continues to frustrate the heck out of me, it is still more valuable to me, as a shooter, than BP. :o If BP buys them out, that would be the "kiss of death" for my (already limited) association with Cabela's. :(

Decided to do a search on this rumor and found one article of interest that might explain it.

Privately held outdoors retailer Bass Pro Shops is exploring an offer for Cabela's, the U.S. hunting and fishing store chain targeted by activist investor Elliott Management, people familiar with the matter said.

Elliott Management has a 11% stake in Cabela's.

Shares of Sidney, Nebraska based Cabela's jumped as much as 13 percent on the news, giving it a market capitalization of around $3 billion.

I would suspect that Elliott Management would profit very well from the sale of Cabela's but that is what activist investors do.They're not in it for the long term.

Of course this is just my uneducated thoughts on the subject. This manner of manipulating the markets to make a profit happens every day.

You are correct. Elliott Management is Paul Singer. I can guarantee you he didn't buy into Cabela's just for chits & giggles. He sees a big, fat and quick profit to be made from selling the company off.

42 years in the communication field, it seemed all phone companies were prepping to either be bought or buy the next smaller fish.

Same ole stuff happens in all business'.

The last start up phone company I worked at for 10 years until retirement had 3 major changes, every 3 years we got new shirts with a new name. Both craft and management.

I have serious dislike of the practices by greedy folks at the top of the food chain who buy and strip companies.

We have allowed greed to ruin many jobs, kill many retirement payments and ruin lives. Sometime I wonder if the politicians and greedy money folks eat at the same Micky D's.

I'm somewhat surprised that either Bass Pro Shop or Cabela's would even open a store in Massachusetts unless it was just a clothing outlet.

I understand. :) Bass Pro was part of a huge expansion of the stadium grounds where the New England Patriots are based. It's now a major destination complex with many stores, restaurants, hotel, movie theater, medical facility... the works! It was the anchor store and was probably sold to the moonbats as primarily a fishing & boating-related store... :D ... which I suppose it is. ;)

Cabela's was another matter. At least some moonbats must have understood that Cabela's means hunting more than it means fishing... and yet I had occasion to sit outside the store one day while waiting to meet someone and 90% of the customers leaving the store were leaving with fishing gear. Go figure. :p

I've visited Massachusetts a couple of dozen times on business . . . fly into Logan and then drive out to Gardner or Westminster. Always thought it was beautiful country but the population density is significantly higher than here. Culture is different too, not bad, just different. I always wondered where people who hunt would do so with the population so dense.

All we have in New Mexico is Sportsman's Warehouse. We had two, but one closed due to bankruptcy restructuring. So it is all irrelevant to me.

I have a great LGS in Helena...and Selway Armory in Missoula. Between the two good prices and they will order about anything.

NO Need for the chain stores. I've seldom found any bargains when I visited a Cabellas store.

A friend and I coined the saying.... "Cabellas..... all a guy could ever want except for a bargain".

Funny story: One of the times they were running a sale on Cabela's $50 gift cards at that big auction site we can't mention, I needed more than the allowed household limit of 5 cards to buy what I was looking at. So I emailed my daughter and her husband and I had them buy 5 too. :)

It was quite a while before I saw them, but I gave them the money for the $250 worth of gift cards and they remarked that my wife and I must really, really like that new restaurant "Cabela's" to spend so much money eating there.  :p

Not being big sports people, they had just assumed that the full name of the place was... "Cabela's Italian Restaurant"! :D :D :D

It was quite a while before I saw them said:

Now that's funny.

I have both about the same distance from me, but tend to favor Cabela's about 10 to 1. Their inventory always seems better and the store just seems "nicer" and well run. Bass Pro just seems like an oversized fishing store with a few hunting/camping/clothing items on the side - not as well rounded I guess.

That said, in shopping at both in various locations around the US, Bass Pro has better restaurants.

Cabelas and Bass Pro

I would hate to see Bass Pro buy Cabelas I dont think it would raise the quality of the Cabelas products and like an earlier poster said a lot of good folks would lose their jobs. I think Bass Pro would come in and cut the older employees that knew their products and had knowledge and they would replace them with a young fellow that would not know what the older employee knew. Also if they buy them I dont know what would happen to our Cabelas stock, if they buy it, I dont want to pay the capitalgains on what we hold as I dont want sell it. I like things to stay as is, I dont like change. Jeff

I've hoarded over 1000 in Cabela's Visa points; I better squander them while I can.

Speaking of odd thinking by Cabela's, the nearest store is in Hoffman Estates, IL, at the edge of Cook County. Why in the world not locate a little west, and avoid the onerous Chicago/Cook County restrictions and the 10% sales tax?

The closest Cabelas or Bass Pro Shops are at least 150 miles from me so other than mail order I have not dealt with either - never set foot in one of their stores. That said, there are rumors that one will becoming to our neck of the woods soon (within 20 miles) but have not seen them start yet. Let's hope...........

The BIG deterrent for them is that here in The PRofNY a store dealing in guns is NOT a wanted vendor. :(

I've been looking for an excuse to ditch my Visa Cabelas card. This would do it for me. I only have it to rack up points for reloading supplies. Cabelas has done pretty well in sourcing powder. Bass Pro has the absolute worst prices for powder and primers. They are on par with g-broker. I would never pay their prices. It's actually a little insulting.

There building a Cabelas close to My House,I was hoping They would give the local Gander Mountain some competition price wise.
