BATFE ID Requirements Change?

Hmmm. that could be a problem for me. Middle name is "W" period. Passport, SS card, DL, FAA, DD etc.Don't know why but I'm 4th generation fathers side with the initial W.
I just check section B of 4473 and it says if initial only include "IO."
Who knows with the ATF.

The "IO" is "INITIAL ONLY" if you were to hand fill out a form you'd put W"IO" and that would satisfy the requirement assuming your ID matched. There's a lot of people with initial only.

FL DL--First, middle, last.
Mil ID--First, Middle Initial, Last.

Federal gov't wants what it does not provide?

+1.

FL Carry License: Middle Initial
FL vehicle registration: Full Middle
DoD CAC: Middle Initial
IRS: Full Middle (pretty sure the IRS gives me a full middle digit too, but I digress.)

Consistency? 🤣

Okay, I just went to the ATF websites FAQ page concerning ID on the ATF Form 4473. It says that the transferee must provide a photo ID with the transferee's FULL LEGAL NAME. Supplemental documents can be used to verify the FULL LEGAL NAME but must be issued by a government agency! This is ********. There is no indication of when this change took place.

Here's the link:

Can item 26.b. on Form 4473, “Supplemental Government Issued Documentation,” be used to document a transferee’s additional government-issued documentation that establishes the transferee’s full legal name and/or current residence address? | Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

Sent with some arcane communications device.
Your DL (government issued ID) SHOULD have your full name!

I do NOT have a middle name but do have an initial. My DL shows my full name (including the initial used for the middle. When I fill out thr 4473 I put the initial and the notation "initial only" behind it. It is confirmed by my DL and I've never had a problem. When you just have a first and last m]name I've been told that in the space for the middle name people put NMN. On my draft card it had my initial followed by "(IO)".
Y'all need to lighten up-it's not a plot.

Interesting.....

My WA DL only has my middle name initial, while my CCW has my middle name spelled out. That's the way it's always been on my DL since I move here in 1987, and believe me I've purchased more than a handful of firearms during the past 35 years.....

I've bought guns using my full middle name, and there's never been an issue.
I'll need to check with my friend who is a partner in a Gunstore to see if there is a recent change.

Just bought my 10MM M&P a couple months back and no issues....

As for ST versus Street, there was a few years that any "abbreviations" were a no-no - had to be spelled out, example WA was a no-go, you had to spell out Washington.....

Well WA WA WA WA WA!
This is no more worser than the local Department of Motor Vehicles :D

My DL and CCL just have my middle initial and I am pretty sure I have filled some 4476's out with nothing for middle name. I have only put my ss# once at cabela's because the computer wouldn't let me leave it blank. Maybe it helps that my last name is uncommon, just guessing.

Reminds me of a story about a guy joining the Army who only had the initials R B instead of first and middle names. The clerk preparing his paperwork typed "R(only)" and "B(only)" in the spaces for his first and middle names. From that point on, his official Army name was Ronly Bonly.

Holy carp, literally crying and laughing right here, right now, and my wife thinks I’ve lost my mind. :D That’s ridiculous and absolutely hilarious!!!

Interesting. My Missouri drivers license and retired LEO credentials both have only my middle initial, and I most recently used my ID to make a purchase at an FFL two days ago. Hopefully this doesn’t become a widespread issue, but I suppose I won’t sweat it if it does as I’d estimate that 90+% of my purchases are private party, cash and carry transactions with residents of my state.

I just checked: My Oregon real ID/DL and CHL, my Utah out-of-state CFP, and my passport have my full first, middle and last names.

Ok, I checked my Oregon DL, full name and III it’s that way on all my other “official” documents, except my Utah CCL which leaves off the III.
I don’t really use the third because my Grandfather and Father are dead so there is not 1st or Jr.’s left.
But the last revolver I purchased I left off the III and they questioned it almost immediately, put it on the paperwork (electronic) and it went through in 10min.
So they want what they want. Small price to pay I guess. ☹️

It is interesting that the document referenced, ATF 2001-5, just says "name", never "full name". The webpage also shows:

Last Reviewed July 15, 2021

Perhaps this is when "full" appeared.

The federal government proved to me they were clueless about peoples names and identities during my immigration process. When you "sign" your naturalization certificate, you must use your full name, including your middle name. Who signs anything like that? For sure, what is on that document isn't what I would call my signature, so as far as I'm concerned, I never signed it. Weird, huh?

The story has a fairly happy ending. My late wife's death certificate has my full legal name and address, and they accepted that as supplemental documentation after calling the corporate people who deal with the ATF. I came home with this with no further delays.

I bought a Walther PPK at Academy used my CCL card from the state so I did not have to call to be checked. On the place where I was born I said "Benton County Ar, Colville township I took the pistol and went home. A few days later I got a letter from them asking me to come back and finish the 4473 form. I dug out my birth certificate and went back and they said I needed to show Rogers Ar as where I was born. Remember this was 1940 when I was born on the farm at home and Rogers had about 3000 people and we lived about 6 or 7 miles out of town. I said if I say this I would be lying on the form and breaking the law. We just need you to do this. I had a FFL for 14 years but had dropped it about 25 years earlier, OK I said but its not true, The Birth certificate showed just what I stated. Jeff

I find it ironic that when Russian Communism was in its hay-day, all of its citizen were issued an "Internal Passport" which was the persons identification paperwork. One couldn't go or do anything in the country without presenting this passport document to those who demanded to see it.

Now that Russian Communism is dead, what is happening in the US? One must have official Gov't identification paperwork and the US Foreign Travel Passport is fast becoming the gov'ts ID which is accepted. It is readily accepted as an "official" gov't identification and I bet soon it will be the required form of ID. One has to wonder if the Gov't's trend toward Socialism have anything to to with it?
