"Battle" rifle discussion ...

Prairie dog shooting teaches accuracy, bad knees teaches longer accuracy on prairie dogs. I'm not running, walking, or driving from the comforts of home, guns, or available ammo.

I will be the rear guard and cook. The same gunsmith built my "match" weapons starting small with a 10-22, Rem 700 308, and a couple of 1911s. That will take care of front door out to you need a scope to see 'em. Three ARs and a bucket of ammo should work for crowd control.

I believe the "Korean shopkeeper" defense still works. Shot the guy in front of the mob with the biggest stick and the mob disperses. My old neighbors will come huddle with us for extra ammo and more guns.

Several good choices.....Just remember Jack Reacher's advice, "Take out the leader first".

I think of mine more as a PDW than an MBR but if the SHTF it would B OK.....:D

This chant comes to mind when I saw them: Siggy socky siggy socky oiy oiy oiy :D They used to say that on The Man Show while about to drink free Beer. Now you done it, I want one now and is on the to get list hopefully this year. :D

I am old and fat and have a bad back and bad knees. So I am going to be the guy that slows down the onslaught of the urban crush.

Are you quoting from my medical records? :)

Those are the reasons I want an accurate long range rifle.

GAME CHANGER:
Due to real life reasons Carpriver lists I developed an alternate mode for running and general outside stuff, like carrying out deer, climbing steep Ozark hills and packing in or out stuff.

I bought a Yamaha Big Bear 400 in 4WD. It holds perfectly still while mounting or after you drop the reins and eats less than a horse. It is also faster than all young guys. :D

I live in a fairly rural area and a few years ago when the topic of SHTF rifles came up a friend said the was going to buy something on the AR platform. I told him I had nothing against the AR but I already owned a Garand and an 870. Said for what he paid for a good AR I could buy enough Mosin Nagants and ammo to supply every house within a mile radius of my house with a rifle and combat load of ammo. That would give us a good early warning system. Hear the bark of a Mosin and know someting is up.

Personal Battle Rifle????????????????????? Come on guys......we don't need more names like that now do we?????
How about semi auto carbine or semi auto rifle and leave it at that????
Geeeze.

The problem is there is no good title for it, PDW really refers to a 200 meter and in weapon. I'll agree Battle Rifle has negative connotations and really is not appropriate for civilians. However, every Semi-Auto or Carbine does not fit the role. Other than a SHTF rifle, I don't know what else you would call it???

We've finally moved away from Assault Weapon/Rifle. Progress takes time.

There's a reason the Germans wanted to outlaw the Model 97 trench guns during WWI. It's because they're deadly and downright effective!

Call me weird, but never did like the M-16. I have an SKS and plenty of ammo, but if the proverbial "ship hits the sand," I'll probably be grabbing the short-barreled Model 870. Just take one out to the range with a few rounds of 00 buck and you'll easily understand why no one wants to be on the receiving end of one of those things.

I'm old. I'm stiff and sore. I'm tired and have a bad temper... and I'm definitely not going to be running from cover-to-cover, taking out the enemy as I go while yelling, "This one's for Mother!!"

I, too, will be in the rear with the rest of the kitchen patrol feeding the troops with my .45 on my hip and my shotgun close by.

I am of the belief that the will to use what you have when the time comes is the most important. That being said , the only time I was in a position to really need a rifle was in the civil riots of the late 60's and early 70's. Myself, like most of my fellow officers, had M1/M2 GI Carbines. I felt very well armed. Today my choice would be one of the 30 Cal. semi autos, AR-10, Fal ,G-3 ,M1A or even an M1 Garand. Having competed in many Hi-Power matches as well as "Combat" matches,I find the 30's have the edge at anything more than eyeball to eyeball range and can quite frankly do just fine up close and personal or dominate out at real rifle range, 600yds and farther. That is why they are re-issueing M-14's today. I do favor the shorter barreled versions of the above rifles. Remember , those of us who Prairie Dog shoot , for the most part, limit our 223/556 shooting to maybe 400 yards and go to faster heavier cartridges for longer range shooting and we are talking about hitting and killing large rat sized targets. Need I say more. For me, to have to pick only one would be a full sized rifle caliber, but I don't have to pick one and do own Ar's, pump and auto shotguns as well as most rifle calibers in both semi and manual versions. I also have more than one weight hammer in my toolbox. All my very best, Joe.

Saw a t-shirt a while back that said "7.62x , because sometimes "the target" tries to hide behind something". I left the length of ctg off because the same holds true for a case lengths of 51mm, 54R, or 62mm.

I suspect the best rifle to use would be the one that you are familiar with and have ammo for.

I myself am not used to firing rifles or shotguns and am looking forward to going to the range and learning to use the Rossi/Puma that my husband got for me. Compared to the various models and calibers discussed here, it looks like a toy, but it could take down an abandoned feral dog and discourage a prowler looking for a "soft" target.

We also have a small shotgun that I'm going to practice firing. If I need more, I'm running and praying as I go!

However, I do have my eye on a beautiful Remington .308 I saw in a particular place, just because I understand it's easy to get .308 ammo and this Remington is just plain pretty. But I don't know that I will ever actually buy it; I'm not sure I could even hold it steady. It's just fun to look at!

I'm most familiar and comfortable with the AR platform and that's mainly what I have. I also have shotguns and OO buck for up close defensive position like protecting my front door. I also have varmint rifles and a Garand and ammo if needed.
I would expect family here in such a situation and although all are hunters would take some instruction with ARs but be fine with what they brought and shotguns and deer rifles.
We just went days with no power here and a generator that wasn't running right. Lesson learned was you stay real busy just trying to survive off the grid without BGs at your door wanting some.

For an affordable semi auto in 308 the brand new Russian izmash saiga is hard to beat. For the quickness and dependability for slinging lead down range the saiga is number 1. Plus its light to carry. It's not a looker but it's the number one action in one of the most accurate long range calibers. The m14/m1a is second but it has a longer reach. I never did like the ar 15/ar 10 platform.

Bill ... I'll add VEPR to the Saiga as an affordable option in .308. RPK receiver, Russian built, and tough.

I really like the mini-14 except for two flaws. So called battlefield accuracy is not good enough. Secondly the magazines go in at an awkward angle and sometimes need to be reseated. Ruger should have gone with an M16 magazine, but then they would lost out on all that money from over charging for 10 round magazines.
