Before. Guns?

My mother told a story after my father died. They got married just after WWII, and were living in the house out in the country, while my father was still building it. The yard was full of building material, and my father was worried that someone might come by and start messing with it during the night. He told my mother, "Now Margaret, if I hear anyone out there, I'll yet "GET THE GUN!" Don't you yell back "WE DON'T HAVE ONE!"

I got my first shotgun, a single shot 20, when I was 15 or so. I've had a gun ever since.

Had one a these hidden under the bed...

Always had a sheath knife as a kid. Mom tossed it on me.

As soon as I was able, had a wife and a house, I bought a Sig P220.

These days I carry a 3" 13 with home cast Lyman 358156 160g SWC over 15.5g W296.

Also, I have a tonfa, excrima sticks, home made nunchaku and a short staff under the bed. Oh yeah, also a full size official police baton.

When my father was at sea, my mother relied on a Doberman for home protection. The Doberman, Misty, was so protective of the house and the family that I honestly believe that if some stranger had entered the house, Misty would have tried to kill him.

After the MLK riots in near by Washington DC, a Winchester M97 Trench Gun was kept behind the front door.

Before you purchased guns for home protection what did you use?
Well, that was a very L-O-N-G time ago and I was only in my new house for less than a year before I got my LTC. Before that I had an FID, but no personally-owned guns to go with it. We did get a German Shepard soon after moving in, but I can't recall if that was before or after the LTC.

I honestly can't recall that home protection was a big concern of mine in that time frame (1975-1976) pre-kids.

I've always had access to guns, but I competed in Schutzhund with 3 Rottweilers in the late 70's and 80's, and tended to rely on them.
I did Schutzhund too and am working my Bouv now [emoji4]

I've owned at least one gun since I went out into the big old world on my own, and my dad always had guns while I lived at home. So I guess I didn't really have any pre-gun times.

Where I grew up we didn't even take the keys out of the cars.
However, my GrandDaddy gave me a Stevens singleshot 20 gauge when I was 10. Different world then. I sure miss it!!

I moved out of the house when I turned 18. I took my Mossberg 22 bolt action rifle with me, and soon after bought a Ruger MKI 22. I didn't graduate to center fire handguns or rifles until I was 21, and I bought a Colt 1911 brand new. It was a satin stainless 45, and I wish I still had it. I later inherited another 1911 from my Dad, it is in 38 super, and I still have that one. First S&W,....... a police turn in model 66-1, which I still have.

Here's the 38 Super and the 66-1. I do still have the Mossberg 22 by the way, I got it when I turned 13 (I think).

I have often wonder about the effectiveness of cold steel for home SD. I went through bayonet training in BCT at Fort Dix, Summer of 1967-"WHAT'S THE SPIRIT OF THE BAYONET !!!!". Cold Steel sells an assegai with a short shaft. And cold steel is SBD.

Cannot remember when there were not guns in the house. My first memory of one being used for home protection was when I was about seven.
We had a back porch that was about seven or eight steps up from ground level. My brothers and my bedroom window opened onto the porch. My dad woke me up with his hand over my mouth and was softly telling me to look out the window. There was a guy working on breaking into our back door. My dad watched for a moment and then racked the old Colt 45 and the guy must have known what the sound was. He took off of the back porch with a flying leap not using the steps. I will never forget.

I grew up on a ranch. Guns were always the primary form of home protection. The Sheriff was the guy you called after it was all over.

Sheriff or police, rural, suburban or urban, it's still that way, it's just that a lot of people don't realize it.

In terms of my own house, I have a concealed carry permit (and was working as an LEO) before I graduated from college, so again guns have always been the primary means of home defence.
