Before I buy is the 15-22 worth it?

Well, if I were going to get a fun plinker 22, I'd go with the Ruger 10/22 take down model. I don't think the M&P 15-22 is worth it. Get her the Shield first and then later down the road the Ruger.

Sorry but you asked.

I agree. Get a Ruger 10/22 for a family plinker. Many variations to choose from and spend the extra money on quality ammo and a few extra $9 mags.

I would lean towards the 10/22
I bought my boy a 15/22 thinking he would really love the look
He couldn't have cared less about the look
Given a choice he will take his late grandfather's Marlin bolt action to the range over the 10/22 or 15/22

Everyone's family is different.

I have the bolt and lever action 22's that I learned on. Iron sights and very accurate. But both are heavy as a result.

My son will OCCASIONALLY ask for one of them. More often than not, he's firing the 15-22.

The other issue we have is that we enjoy shooting suppressed. Neither the bolt nor lever action are threaded, and it would do a disservice to the firearm to make it so.

As far as the 10/22 - I think it comes down to personal preference. Both rifles have excellent reputations...

To each their own.

I like the 15/22, have fired one without issue, but don't feel like I need it. I do have a Ruger 10/22 takedown, which I really enjoy.

My training was always making each shot effective, and the rifle was an M1, so I have a different perspective.

Real happy with 15-22

I have had one for a couple of years now and love it. Got it for my Grandson but shoot it as much as he does. Using a can on it is a blast. I also want to take a second to brag on Smith and Wesson customer service. My Grandson was set to shoot in a match on a Saturday a few weeks ago. I was shooting it on Thur. and the extractor broke. I called the factory and they told me to ship the rifle in. I ask if there was a repair center close to me. They gave me a number and I did not get an answer but did a search on the computer and found L.S.G. Manufacturing and gave them a call. Frank Smith told me that if I could bring it down in the morning he would fix it. It was a three hour drive but well worth it. Frank was a great guy and the Grandson shot his first match the next day. Smith and Wesson has great guns, customer service and repairmen.

Simply put...Yes. It is the best out of the box .22LR trainer available.
And you can customize them to no end with hand guards, shrouds, suppressors, Etc.

Last week I took my new 15/22 to the range. Ran 100 rounds through it and had one FTF. At 50 yards I was unhappy with the results. Too much glare on the sights, should have blackened them. Get better results with my Winchester 9422. The quest for the perfect .22 rifle is endless.

Anschutz.......i really dote on my 1417 thumbhole...perfect stock...14" barrel, trigger is well....1.1lbs of wow. Bolt is smoother than my 9 month old babies skin. Precision German engineering! Need to add nothing, just treat her right. She will consistently nail the head of a pin, operator willing.

The 15-22.....coolest 22lr ever....have shot the HK, a few GSG's the Anschutz 'AR', the 'AK's' even the tricked out AR rugers....sure the 15-22 has a few teething troubles and out the box is benefited by add-ons.....but THAT is where this rifle excels....you can add everything and anything. Fully customise and swap. It looks cool, shoots great and gives me a warm fuzzy feeling when i grab her from the safe.

The 1417 is for serious competition target precision, when i want to have fast, accurate fun.....the 15-22.

The only other gun i truly covert at this time is the Sako range

I've been told to go buy a gun for a wedding present from my fiancé. I've been torn between the 15-22 and the shield 9mm. I already have a full size m and p 9 so the 15-22 will be much more fun for us to shoot together so I'm leaning that way. I've been looking around the forum and don't see anyone regretting buying it so it seems to be a good purchase. Anything I should know before picking one up? Also even though in just a 22 caliber it'd be good enough to take care of a nuisance squirrel or groundhog or two, right? I don't intend to hunt with it, just for fun at the range. Thanks
I have two of the 15-22 and I love them. Dependability is about 98%....very dependable rifle

I bought my 15-22 about 5 years ago when the S&W retail store (and public range) was still open in Springfield, MA (miss them both!). I bought the free state version and had it shipped back to FL. It is a fun, highly reliable shooter. I haven't shot it beyond the 50 yard range, but even with a red dot and no magnification, it does a great job. FTFs are quite rare and it will shoot about any ammo. I also have a 10/22 with the tactical UTG folding stock. I like it a lot, but the 15-22 was great out of the box. To get the 10/22 to where I wanted it to be, I bought the Ruger BX-25 trigger with it's lighter, smoother 4 lb. pull. I really like it, but it did add another $90. Get the 15-22, you'll have a lot of fun with it.

thats so true with a Good red dot and laser its amazing how good it works i took my 22 camping i was shooting cans with just the laser not evening using the red dot lol after a lot of hard work i finished my mods to it adding a free float hand gaurd etc Love this gun

The one overriding reason I bought mine is the fact all the controls work exactly the same as a AR-15. I can learn and maintain the same "muscle memory" needed to run the AR-15 platform at a lot better price than running 5.56 all the time. Plus it's a real hoot ta shoot!

I doubt you'll find too many folks here that wouldn't recommend the 15-22... but then again, this is a 15-22 forum. :D

I guess it depends on the lady. She obviously is a shooter, since you've been instructed to get her a gun. This is my favorite gun I own even though it is my least accurate. Where it shines is ease of use, being based on an AR platform and relatively cheap ammo. For lots of ladies, kids & first time shooters, it shines because a 22 doesn't kick and is not very loud. Put a suppressor on it and then it is very quiet.

It is accurate enough for what it is designed to do... plink. Yes, it is accurate enough to take the occasional small game and plenty accurate to hit targets and soda cans. It would be my last choice to put meat on the table but that is not a concern as I have other guns for that. This is my fun gun & my trainer for my ARs. It is so similar to a real AR that the training is valuable and much cheaper. This also is the gun that I use to introduce new shooters to the sport. 100% of the time, all new shooters have truly enjoyed it and left with big smiles.

Actually he's saying the gun will be for him and his fiancé told him to buy it for himself as a gift from her.

Been shooting for 55 years and owned scores of guns during that time including many .22s. I have .22s that are much more accurate than the S&W15-22 and ARs that are much more powerful, but the gun I shoot the most is my 15-22. I've had it for about 5 years and bought another for my son last year.
It's just so much fun and economical to shoot that it gets about 90% of my rifle usage and I have 10 other rifles.

I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to add another 'thumbs up' for the 15-22. I'm purely a recreational shooter/plinker and this thing is as fun as the reviews and youtube videos say it is! Even if you get a bad price it's a good deal!
