Behind Enemy Lines in Kaliforniastan!

Welcome to The Forum. (I capitalize because there are none better!)
Is there a restriction on 3rd Gens there? Seems like there should be a mess of used 4006s floating around.

Thanks, Pete, and everyone! There is no restriction on 3rd Gens per se in California. California firearms laws are complex and volumes could be, and have been, written about them. Briefly, for used out of production guns like 3rd Gens, the most relevant restriction is that they can only be purchased face to face in a private party transaction. That means you can't buy one, even used, from a dealer. It also means you can't buy one out of state, like on Gunjoker.com, and have it shipped to your FFL. So we are effectively limited to buying used guns that are already in state and owned by private parties within a distance we are willing to drive (twice). The ten day wait in California before a firearm can be transferred only compounds the issue. I might be willing to drive a long way for a gun a I really want, but having to drive back again in ten days to pick it up just doubles the pain. Inflicting pain on gun owners is of course one of the main objectives of California firearms laws, and from that perspective they're doing a great job.

I appreciate all the warm greetings. I have a thread going in the gunsmithing forum and have already gotten a ton of valuable information from members. I love this place!

Welcome from a fellow Californian. A lot of the issues depend on what you're trying to collect/buy. I'm mostly interested in Colt Single Actions and older Smiths. There's no restrictions on single actions of any vintage or most guns over 50 years old (there are issues with high capacity magazines of any age), so I don't run into too many issues. I'm also seeing a lot of LGS selling guns on consignment which allows the sale of off roster guns through retail shops. And of course there are still auctions to attend.

Best regards,

Best regards,

Great to see some fellow Californians on here. I am pretty familiar with the Byzantine California restrictions. I am primarily interested in 3rd Gen semi autos, which unfortunately are not old enough for the C&R list. I have started checking local gun stores for consignments. I am aware of one trove of S&W gems that showed up on consignment at a LGS about a year ago at reasonable prices, but they are long since gone. Someday, maybe history will repeat.

In the meantime, I am fascinated by your reference to "of course there are still auctions to attend." Do they auction consignment guns so can sell off roster? Where do I find these auctions? Do you have any links?
