Beretta M-92: Your Opinion?

Trained in MP school with the 1911A1. I was told the M9 was supposed to fit everyone and eliminate the need for the M10 S&W for women. The M9 is too big for my hand, I have numerous reports from Senior NCO's that students have been either taught to cock the weapon or wast the 1st shot! Because of the over sized grip and double/single action system. Never owned or shot one. Picked up and examined quite a few, always thought I should own and or shoot one, never been able to get over the hump!

This is mine, a 1988 92F, and I wouldn't get rid of it for anything. I bought it from a co-worker in 1995 and owned it until 2000, when I sold it to a local dealer. The gun reappeared 3 years ago in a west Nashville gun store, so I bought it back. It's had a new set of springs from Wolff, and with factory or Mec/Gar mags it runs 100%.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday. I also looked at the new version the 90- Two. Looks a little fancier but just such a large gun.

Try the current 92FS, with the radiused backstrap. Feels quite a bit better. I have large hands, but the M-9 is marginal in them. The radiused version is def. a better fit.

Good pic of the M-92F, good pic of the M-28, and good pic of the bag for the really nice whiskey! :)

I had a 92FS that I bought in the mid-90s. It was the only gun I've owned that never had any kind of functioning issue, and that includes my revolvers. I had over 4,500 rounds through it, everything from the cheapest remanufactured ammo I could find to higher-end premium loads (it was often loaded with Cor-Bon 115gr JHP +P or Federal 124gr Nyclad) and never experienced any malfunctions. While it had a slide-mounted safety, it was spring-loaded so I could swipe it off with the same motion I used for 1911s. Decocking was also easier than on Sigs with the frame-mounted decocker (I either had to shift the gun in my shooting hand dramatically or use my support hand thumb). I also liked the accuracy. I've shot a couple of small, one-hole groups, once at 25 yards slow-fire and once at about 5 yards rapid fire.

The two negatives for me were the large grip and the DA/SA action. I don't have large hands. The Glock 9mm/.40 grip frame is about as large a semi-auto as I feel comfortable holding; the 92FS is considerably larger. Combine that with a large trigger reach and I'm surprised I shot as well with it as I did. With a proper grip I could barely get the pad of my index finger on the trigger. I never really liked the DA/SA action. I found myself spending entire range sessions doing nothing but practicing the transition.

Overall I still think it's an excellent gun, just not the best fit for me.

I own an M9 and I like it, they came to our unit in 87 while I was stationed in Berlin BDE. I own several 1911 style guns and like those too, but given my choice I would carry a S&W 27 just because I know I can feed it jut about anything. I have seen many pictures of Vietnam era Special Forces guys with Ruger 357 Blackhawks. I know the next line will tick peopl off but the 1911 is not the be all end all gun.

OK gun but too big and heavy for the cal. I would like a .45 better, but I can't really give a good reason why. I meen c'mon do you really think a non expanding FMJ projectile 2.25mm larger in dia. actually makes a differance?

With good modern design hollow points, the difference becomes even smaller.. I keep 147gr HPs in my 92F for serious encounters, and I don't feel outgunned. With the 18rd Mec/Gar mags I have, that's a lot of shooting!!

I shot a Beretta 92 just once to try one out. Hated it. Could not get on with the blocky grips and the trigger reach. For those who say the 92 is too big and heavy, try a fullsize Baby Eagle. 38-40 oz of highly accurate 9mm with almost negligible recoil. The size and shape of the grip is MUCH better than the 92, as it is with nearly all CZ75 based pistols.

I have to say that for straight out of the box user friendliness and accuracy, a 9mm M&P takes a lot of beating.

I keep rolled coins in a Crown Royal bag until I get to the bank. Have another bag with some classic cartridges in it.

Handy bags!
