Just getting to know my .223/ 5.56. What would the long time users of this platform say the best ammo is for a guy that doesn't reload. I plan to use it for coyote this next couple of months. Usually in the mid20 temps outside.

Take a look at Black Hills Ammunition. At one time, they were the only manufacturer (and probably still are) of the 77gr OTM ammunition used by our special forces. They also sell remanufactured ammunition that is every bit as good and considerably cheaper than the same ammunition loaded in virgin cases.

Black Hill's 55gr soft nose. Accurate in my rifles and I'm told good terminal performance.

I'm liking that 36 grain, will have to consider the stopping power at 300 yards. Looking for a dealer in the area and will give it a try.

The most accurate ammo I have used in my Sport has been from Sonoran Arms in Arizona. Very consistent. I got FMJ but I think he might also make a HP.

I'd probably use the 60gr V-Max bullet for coyote at that distance. When I used to shoot competition, we considered 300 yards about the maximum distance for the 69gr. match bullets. After that, wind drift took them out of the running.

Lots of good info for me, thanks. I'm reading that 55+ is the best weight in most cases. Going to change up the whole dog hunting routine this year. I just put a vortex1-4x24 viper on this week but haven't been out to zero it in yet.
Hornandy makes a 53gr ballistic tip that I like as well, seems about right.

any decent 55gr-60gr varmit bullet should be fine.

I really like the VMAX and ballistic tips

223/5.56 works great for coyotes

I got a pretty good gig, 250+ acres of posted private land that the owner allows me exclusive privileges . All he wants in return, other than the normal respect of private land, is to get the deer population down and rid him of as many coyotes as possible.
I love this ar-15 platform. It's a new gun for me I have always been a bolt action guy. I bought a 40 round clip in honor of the tree huggers voting against my second amendment rights.
If you took the hooves off of a deer it would have no defence against predators so they can leave my guns alone. Wrong forum, I'll get off of my soapbox.
I need to put a bipod on it but on the fence as to keeping the magpul or going to picatinny type.

Good information all around. I have a 15t and just purchased 50+ acres in Maine for hunting. I want to use mine for dogs and was looking for the right .223 or 5.56. I have Aimpoint CompM3 on it now, but may change that out for more magnification. My problem is I am limited to a 5rd magazine. I need to find some of them.

I just saw a .223 Federal 80gr. "Long Range Sniper Hollow Point Ammo" said to have been manufactured by Federal for the U.S. Military. This ammo is designed to be shot in throated barrels only. Would that work in my barrel?

I use these in my yote AR (15 Sport). With the light weight, 300 yards is probably a stretch though.

I have a couple hundred acres in Southern MO. There really aren't any shots over 200 yards on my place. They're plenty accurate in my rifle for me. Minute of Coyote anyway.

Pulled one on this group.

Good luck with the song dogs. Kill em all.

Spokane Paul, Send me a PM and I will give you a box of the 40 gr. V Max Fiocchi ammo shown in Chew's post. I usually load V Max in heavier bullets but I got a good deal on a few boxes of Fiocchi.

You really need a 1/7 or faster twist barrel to stabilize the 80gr OTM. A 1/8 is questionable, although it should stabilize a 77gr bullet.

I was afraid nobody would ask him about the twist rate. Look up what twist rate applies to what weight bullets. Then consider what bullet applies.

That's a great offer and we chew the same dirt on the east side of the state. This forum stuff is new, as soon as I can figure out how to send a PM I'll do it. Working on it! Thanks for that again..

Shoot about 160 rounds of 55 grain through on Sunday. A coyote kill shot wouldn't be to difficult if you can get them into 100 yards. My pattern needs a tighter group at 100 to move out to 200.
