Best "+P" .44 Special Factory Load for Dual Use

I would consider the old Keith load of 250 grain bullet with 2400 well beyond +P. I usually load 44 Special up to 1000fps for better than factory loads and call it good.

For factory ammo, the Double Tap ammo that I have used has been high quality and quite perky.

I think the gold standard in .44 Spl. for self defense is the CCI/Speer Blazer/Lawman Gold Dot 200 gr.

my choice

My two .44 Specials are both L frames (696 & 396 NG) and they are my preferred carry. I shoot mostly CCI Blazer .44 Special Gold Dot in them at the range but carry the Corbon 200 DPX in them. They shoot to within .5" at the range so I don't end up practicing with a very expensive round. I usually shoot the cylinder full of DPX about once a month so that's not too bad (120 or so rounds per year) I feel my hide is worthy of the best and the DPX would certainly be sufficient for what you were concerned with. If I carry where bigger stuff is a threat I tote my 4" Redhawk .45 Colt with heavy Buffalo Bore loads.

I have killed many deer with the XTPs in both 240 and 180 grain flavors. Never had one fail to do it job on whitetail here in Missouri out of my Super Redhawk. I am now loading my own 240 grain XTPs under 23.1 grains of Win 296. They are excetionally accurate out of my SuperRedhawk. While under max load for this combination I can't wait to try them out this fall. I believe they will perform as well if not better than the factory XTPs have done for me.
