The Best S&W Revolver Ever?!

In rimfire:

The tank:

Multiple tens of thousands of rounds, often put out at ludricrous rates of speed, and still perfectly timed. No repairs, tweaks or mods except the grips aren't the ones with which it was shipped and a spot of white paint on the front sight was added.

In centerfire?

I'm still deciding! But this one is in the running. (29-5 6" AFS export proofed):

That shore is a purty pile of steel you got there. Hard to argufy with you.

Of what I have kept in my collection it would have to be the 3.5 inch Model 27-2 followed closely by my 4 inch 617 no dash.

The fact that a 696 is the best carry gun the OP has ever had sure doesn't make it the "best S&W ever build" (or built - lol). That distinction would have to go to the RMs or one of the other early Target Models.

My preference would be one of the N-frames like a 357 Magnum 3.5" or 5" but that's just personal preference. An argument can also be made for the original N-frame the First Model 44 Hand Ejector, or New Century or more commonly the Triple Lock. The fitting on those is just a beautiful thing to see and feel.

As for the best carry gun, there's so much personal opinion involved in that claim it's kind of pointless to ask the question. You could get as many answers as there are members. (smile)

Isn't that basically what the Ruger Redhawk is?

Not even close. The Redhawk is a huge, heavy, .44 mag that makes full power .44 mag ammo FEEL like .44 spl.
But, it's too big/heavy for me to use as an EDC or bedside gun.
