Big .45? Brass said 45 super?

I was at my gun club this morning and a couple of men were shooting a big semi-auto. It looked like 1911 style but was the loudest and heaviest recoiling I had seen in a long time. You could feel the pressure wave from 20 ft away every time he fired it. I picked up one of the ejected brass and it was a 45 but about as long as a 45 colt instead of the 45acp. The brass said 45 super and I have never heard of that. Anyone know anything about this gun and ammo?

Yeah, I know all about google but was just too lazy. Plus, you guys on here always know more about this stuff. But I'll tell you one thing, that was one powerful blast. The guys at end of the range, 5 lanes down could feel it every time it was fired. Thanks musicmanbass!

Maybe it was a .45 Win Mag?

I have a .45 Super, and it really isn't much more than a standard .45 ACP.

I have a few boxes (part of a trade) of 45 Super. Appears to be ACP size. Am I correct in thinking that it would be a bad thing to shoot them in my standard 1911s?

Yes, you are correct; it is not a good idea to shoot .45 Super in a standard 1911..

The brass I picked up was almost twice as long as the 45 acp's. They were closer to the length of the 45 long colt so I don't think they'd work in a 45 acp.

Because he and his buddy seemed pretty busy and I didn't want to intrude. It irritates some people when you do that.
