well i was comparing trigger pulls with another smith of mine and the trigger on this gun has been pretty sweet but this time i felt a gritty feel and trigger wasnt reseting all the way. so i popped of the side plate and the main pin the hammer rides on is broken off the frame. so tomorrow im goin the the shop i got it from and im guessing they will send it back to smith. years ago now i had a 638 s pin break im not sure which one it was on it becuase i never opened it . i got this gun because it had a steel frame and hoped it would hold up better and it actually was worse i had a few thousand rounds through the the 638 and i have 200-300 out of this gun . well im not real happy to say the least what an awesome way to start the new year:mad:

Skip the middleman and call S&W yourself; per warranty, if you're the original owner and it's post-'89 production, they'll ship and repair on their dime. Some members here report S&W doing same on guns that don't meet that criteria, too, but I wouldn't depend on it.

S&W can fix it...

I shipped the pictured model 60 (no dash) to them for the same problem. They drilled a hole through the left side of the frame and pressed a new pin through the hole. You can see the exposed pin just below the cylinder release (no, that isn't one of those "lock" things).

Overall, they did a really nice job. Your gun may have replaceable pins which can be replaced without need for the new hole in the side. Obviously mine couldn't.

The shipping and repair cost me more than I wanted, but for this keepsake it was worth it. Since your handgun is covered by warranty, your shipping and repair will only cost you time.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Call them yourself and they will send you a shipping tag to send it back for free. Unfortunately, I have have had to do this several times in the past few years.

Edmo- The trigger pin hole was there on yours originally-you just did not see it since the guns are finished after pins are installed and groung/polished smooth. A new pin was intalled in existing hole and you see the end of it. If the gun was totally refinished, you would not see it unless inspected closely.

K1500 - what models did you have to send back?

Interesting, never knew that.

The pin I broke was the hammer stud on my 60 and not the pin for the trigger. The replacement pin in the picture is slightly recessed from the surface and the exposed end is slightly rounded.

Edmo-Meant to say hammer pin. But 3 pins(trigger, hammer, rebound slide) are installed in holes in frame first before finishing. Not sure about the cyl. stop pin. Look close at your gun and may see the flatened ends which were round before installation. I had one installed for my rebound slide and it has a rounded end as yours. Luckily mine is hidden by its target stocks and is blued.

[1] Same thing happened on a 642 of mine. I sent it to SW and they replaced the entire gun under warranty.

These things happen, that's why there are warranties.

[2] Choose to be positive. It's a gun and it will get fixed. Have some perspective; many people have much bigger problems than a broken gun. Most of time the difference between having a good day and a bad day is whether you decide to have a good day or a bad day.

is it just j frames this seems to happen to? because if they have to replace the whole gun i may take the option to choose something else even if i gotta pay a difference kinda put off on j frames now. but they are sending me a label just gotta wait atm

john123456;
This has happened to large frame revolvers. My friend had a Model 29 a number of years ago that had the hammer pin break on his. It is not a common problem and it has nothing to do with "new"guns vs "old guns", nor MIM vs Forged nor hole vs no hole.

I had to send a 329pd back 3 times before it was fixed correctly, and I had to send a 617 in once. All were new guns when purchased by me. The 617 was shaving and spitting lead. The 329 had a failure to fire problem. They fixed that on trip #1 but when it came back, the ejector rod had so much runout it rubbed the frame and made the trigger pull very heavy and variable. They fixed that on trip #2 and then when it came back the trigger would not return fully forward after every shot. They more or less fixed that on trip #3.

i wonder what the heck makes this happen at all its a strange failure . it doesnt seem like there should be that much force on it idk im sure it will be fixed or replaced i just gotta wait a bit thanks for all the info
