There are some monumental anniversaries coming soon. Aug 5,1944 the invasion of Southern France. Aug 6 1945 the first Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Aug 7,1942 the Marines land at Henderson Field, Guadalcanal. Aug 9, 1942 the Seabees of NCB land at Guadalcanal. Also the Battle of Savo Island, 1st NCB in combat.
History is an amazing thing. So much of the evolution of civilization involves armed conflict. One group of humans trying to impose their will on another, from brute force to high technology. Spying, electronic warfare, propaganda, psychological warfare, information technology, weapon systems and the training of warfighters has gotten so sophisticated that it is scary. No matter how advanced we get, we still need boots on the ground, kicking in doors, wading thru swamps, jumping from planes at night, battling the elements and shooting the enemy from up close or from far away. To my way of thinking the profession of arms is a honorable and worthwhile endeavor.
