Military rifles, especially ones used for training, often are very, very well used and "loose" relative to privately cared for ARs that are often only used at the range or for varmint hunting.
One of the big arguments for our Military's adoption and retention of the Stoner platform as opposed to the AK type weapon is the inherent, superior accuracy of this platform.
IF you are shooting off hand or bench supported with only the mag as a support, you really don't know how accurate your rifle may be. A really good trigger, solid bipod or rest system and decent optics may have you changing your mind about the AR.
Sniper weapons are optimized for larger rounds and super long distances. You might be surprized at how well the AR compares in medium distance accuracy. Some ARs are more accurate than others but the variance is normal within MILSPEC standards.
