I quit hunting quail back in the 90s when the bird population was decimated by disease and never really recovered in my area ........until now. I loved quail hunting and misssd it horribly. I haven't had a dog for years ......until now. The birds are back and I'm ready to to get serious again. Me and this little firecracker will be after em next November!

Good looking pup.
Quail were decimated up here in the blizzard of 1978
and have never really recovered. Every once in awhile
you may kick up a covey here and there but the numbers
in central Indiana just aren't there.
What breed is your pup?
Good looking lines.

She's a Brittany. Wonderful bird dogs and great family dogs.

Nice looking pup.

I hunted quail in AZ when I was in high school and some after I got out of the Navy. There are huge coveys of quail in eastern WA but they all live in the orchards or in town. I was feeding about 50 of them everyday on BLM land near Ajo AZ last winter. My dog loved to point them but we never shot any. They have a way of moving into places where they are safe, like someones back yard.

my dad had a field trial & amateur field trial Brit champ back in the 1950's but I was too young to hunt over Toby... hunted over a friend's pup in 1987, great dog, honored points , found his own & retrieved... very good work by a young derby age pup, who been well trained by his owner. Good luck to you.. he will turn out by how well you train him.

Back when there were lots of birds I trained several Brits. They worked well. Then the birds went missing.

When I moved to western Mo There were lots of Quail there going into the Flinthills of KS and north to NE. I traded for a trained Elhew pointer and had a great time with both Quail and Pheasants.

Not to detract at all from the cute puppy picture, but I was just wondering if there's any reliable information floating around about why the wild bird population recovered? Glad to hear that it has, in your area at least!

One of my most enjoyed pastimes was............

........Quail hunting. Caught the bug from my Father, and my Brother-in-law while I was growing up, and never got over it, but like others have said the Quail population began to disappear and remained so for many years.

They do seem to be coming back, have a nice covey on my place but will not be shooting them. I like to listen to them calling.

An older Cousin wrote a memoir before he passed, and in one chapter he wrote about my Father, and his love of Quail Hunting. He wrote that my Father and his best friend would only take 8 shells apiece when they went hunting (? Limit at the time ?) and see who came home with 8 Quail. He said my Dad always did.

Not long after reading that I was going through some old photos and found one of Dad with what was 8 Quail before the photo was trimmed. If I remember right that was a Brittany in the image.

Brit's are a great upland dog for quail, chucker and sage hen, here in Nevada.
They have even been used in retrieving ducks from the marsh after
they grow up a little.

I see lots of happy days ahead. Enjoy.

One theory is, Model70hunter was unable to hunt due to job for a long time.

The less proven theory is there are more row crops and cover.

I also think Quail unlimited and Pheasants forever are great for the return.

Great looking pup. I had one once, a little female and she was a natural hunter. Never hunted her but every time we went for a walk in the woods she would spot any movement and come to point.

Now I have Irish setters and they are doing the same thing with the rabbits and squirrels in my yard. Wife won't let me hunt them because of the deer ticks. I've been bit twice and may have lyme now. Went to the doctor and got the antibiotics right away but all of my joints are real stiff. May turn out just to be arthritis kicking in with the cold weather but who knows. :(

Back in the 50's and 60's I used to quail hunt often. Now days around here it is more common to see bald eagles than to see quail. The other day a few quail ran across the road and my wife and I both go, hey looky, quail! Hardly ever see them even out rabbit hunting. Wonder where they all went. South central Missouri.
Peace,
Gordon
