Blizzard of 2016 - What to do? New post 84!

If you have a fireplace/wood burner make sure you have wood to burn .. bring it inside so it will stay dry .. also candles or lantern incase the electricity is lost for lighting .. flashlights .. different kinds batteries are a must .. make sure cell phone is on charger and charged and leave it charging .. unplug if electricity is lost so it won't bleed the battery off ..

Make sure car(s) are filled with gas and backed into driveway or garage !! much easier to pull straight out rather then backing out .. if you have to try to go some place in an emergency ..

Food .. anything that doesn't need to be cooked .. power bars etc. .. you can keep anything in the frig out into the garage to stay cold ..

We just went through an ice storm a few weeks ago here in the Midwest and didn't have power for 24 hours and some areas were with out for 5 days ..

If on a well and you lose electricity the pump won't work .. Fill containers with water for drinking .. filling the bathtub and using a stopper that doesn't leak the water down the drain to flush the commode if that can't be done fill as many containers with water as possible ..

We got between 3-5 inches from this storm last night ..

Good luck !!

I was out of power after the last wind storm in November for seven days..
But I have a generator, so between what went through the panel and two long extension cords I had no problems keeping the house warm, lighting and cooking and the freezer going.
Went through a lot of gasoline running it though.... :(

Everyone has great ideas and yours are good too (chili and cleaning guns). That would be fun to snowshoe the neighborhood or yard if you have a lot of open space like Arjay suggested.

My favorite night time storm/power outage scenario is a warm fire, cheese fondu, a good bottle of wine, and fun board games like monopoly, scrabble, pictionary (better with 4 but do-able with 3).

Hope everyone fares well and stays safe!

If this was in SC, people would be buying bread and milk. All of it. I never understood why.

My plans are.....

Sausage
Coffee
Guns
TV
Shovel
Wine
Bacon
Tequila
Smoked fish
Shovel
Coffee
Rifles
Cigarettes
Cleaning the basement
Sausage and hot peppers wrapped in bacon

I'm just not sure yet in which order I'm doing what

Your list of things to do ain't bad, just drop cleaning the basement.

Six flakes, I bet they closed the school's. :D

They did close the schools today; unbelievable! The snow starts tomorrow afternoon. Then again I hope the weather people are wrong, as usual.

When the news is bad, they are never wrong. I remember when my son moved to Va, back in 91, he called one day and said they were going to get some snow, he said people were slipping and sliding off the roads and it hasn't even started yet. :D

I never understood why people buy milk and bread before a snow because I thought milk and bread would make a terrible sandwich. Then I saw the post about French Toast. I still don't understand the milk and bread.:eek::D Larry

I used to ask people in the long checkout lines if they even ate bread or used milk. Most said, "No."

It is sunny and 60ish here....the last time it actually snowed the city was paralyzed for about a week.

At least you guys are used to seeing the white stuff and actually have the equipment to deal with it, albeit more slowly with an extreme weather event as predicted.

Here, we have to convert weed spraying rigs to handle de-icing solution (and it made the roads more slippery than the actual ice did :O )

Good luck, and stay warm.

It fills the basic needs of nutrients (except for white bread. That's just filler all around) without needing to cook anything. Even if your power goes out both can be kept in a cold place without going bad. And it's cheap. Actually nuts and beans are better but they are more expensive
